Kamstrup KAMSTRUP MULTICAL 403-603 Modbus RTU template

KAMSTRUP MULTICAL 403-603

Reads energy and flow data from Kamstrup MULTICAL heat meters via Modbus RTU.

Modbus RTU template for the Kamstrup MULTICAL 403 and MULTICAL 603 heat meters. It reads thermal energy, water flow, supply and return temperatures, differential temperature, and total energy consumed. All values are provided in real time via float32 registers.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Monitor real-time heating power and water flow on a centralized cloud dashboard for multiple buildings.
  • Log total energy consumed per building to generate monthly or annual heating reports for tenants.
  • Create an alert when the temperature differential drops below a threshold, indicating a potential circulation issue.
  • Compare supply and return temperatures across multiple MULTICAL meters to identify underperforming heat exchangers.
  • Track water flow trends over time to detect leaks or abnormal consumption patterns in district heating networks.

Installation

  1. Connect the RS-485 A and B terminals of the Kamstrup MULTICAL communication module to the corresponding terminals on your ModbusCloud Gateway.

  2. Ensure the Modbus RTU communication module is installed and enabled on the MULTICAL 403 or 603 via the meter's configuration menu.

  3. Set the meter's Modbus slave address to a unique value on the bus and configure the baud rate to 19200 with even parity.

  4. In the ModbusCloud platform, add a new device and import the Kamstrup MULTICAL 403-603 template from the template library.

  5. Enter the configured Modbus slave address in the device settings and verify that live readings appear on the dashboard.

Things to watch for

I see no data after connecting the meter. What should I check?

Verify that the optional Modbus RTU communication module is physically installed in the MULTICAL meter. Not all units ship with it by default. Also confirm that the RS-485 A and B wires are not swapped.

What baud rate and parity settings does this template expect?

The template is configured for 19200 baud with even parity (8E1). Make sure the meter's communication settings match. A mismatch will result in no response on the bus.

How are the float32 registers structured?

Each reading occupies two consecutive 16-bit Modbus registers in standard big-endian (ABCD) byte order. The template handles this automatically, so no manual byte-order configuration is required.

Can I connect multiple MULTICAL meters on the same RS-485 bus?

Yes. Assign each meter a unique Modbus slave address and add a separate device in ModbusCloud for each one, all using the same template. Keep the total bus length within RS-485 specifications and add a termination resistor at the last device.
