Kipp & Zonen Kipp & Zonen SMP10x and SMP22x Modbus RTU template

Kipp & Zonen SMP10x and SMP22x

Class A smart pyranometers for global solar radiation, body temperature, internal humidity and pressure.

The Kipp & Zonen SMP10x and SMP22x are Class A smart pyranometers that measure global solar radiation outdoors, for example on a weather mast for greenhouse climate control or a solar plant. This Modbus RTU template reads radiation, body temperature, internal humidity and pressure, tilt and status flags, and lets you set the scale factor, filters and irradiance clamping from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show outdoor global radiation on a dashboard next to your greenhouse climate or solar data and keep a year of history to compare days and seasons.
  • Get an email alert when Status Flags is not 0, for example for the desiccant saturation warning, so you can plan maintenance in time.
  • Follow internal humidity and pressure to see when the desiccant of the pyranometer needs attention.
  • Set an alarm on Tilt to notice when a pyranometer on a mast is no longer level.
  • Clear an error remotely after a power interruption by writing Clear Error from ModbusCloud.

Installation

  1. Connect the yellow and grey wires to RS485 A and B of the ModbusCloud Gateway and the blue wire to the RS485 common. Power the sensor with 5 to 30 V DC on white (+) and black (ground).

  2. If the sensor is the last device on the bus, fit a 120 or 150 Ohm terminator between A and B. Keep the cable shorter than 100 m.

  3. Give every sensor on the bus its own address with the SmartExplorer software. The factory default is address 1, 19200 baud, 8 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with protocol RTU, the sensor address and 19200 8E1, then import this template.

  5. Check that Device Type shows SMP10x or SMP22x and Radiation a plausible value, close to 0 at night. Allow up to three hours for the sensor to reach a stable temperature.

Things to watch for

The sensor does not answer. What should I check?

Check 19200 baud, 8 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit and address 1, or the values set in SmartExplorer. Swap yellow and grey if nothing answers, connect the blue common wire and check the 5 to 30 V DC supply. Two sensors with the same address block each other. If a climate computer already reads the sensor over RS485, the Gateway cannot share that bus as a second master.

Radiation (Int) is 10 or 100 times off. Why?

The whole-number radiation values follow Scale Factor: 2 means divide by 100, 1 divide by 10, 0 as read and -1 multiply by 10. Auto range can change it. Use Radiation, which already includes the scale factor, or set Default Scale Factor to 0.

Internal Pressure (Int) looks 10 times too high or too low.

The pressure register is given in whole hPa in one place and in 0.1 hPa in another. Compare it with Internal Pressure, which is always in hPa, and use that value for dashboards and alarms. Roll (Int) and Pitch (Int) are in tenths of a degree.

Which template fits my SMP10 or SMP22?

Read Data Model Version. 108 with Device Type 635 or 636 fits this template. An older SMP10 or SMP22 reports 107 and uses the Kipp & Zonen Smart SMP and SGR template, because some registers sit at other addresses there.

Can I change the scale factor or the filters from ModbusCloud?

Yes. Writing registers is off per gateway by default; request it for the gateway and ModbusCloud switches it on. Default Scale Factor, irradiance clamping and the filter switches are not stored: after a power cut the sensor starts with its factory settings again. Write 1 to Clear Error after each power-up to reset the error flag.
