Monitors power analytics from the Rayleigh Instruments RI-F550 energy meter.
Overview
This template reads power analytic registers from the Rayleigh Instruments RI-F550 energy meter over Modbus RTU. It covers voltage, current, power, power factor, kVA, and max demand. The RI-F550 offers many additional registers, but this template includes the most commonly needed data lines.

Use cases
Monitor three-phase voltage, current, and power on a live cloud dashboard for commercial buildings.
Create alerts when power factor drops below a defined threshold to flag capacitor bank issues.
Track max demand readings over time to help customers avoid peak demand penalties from their utility.
Log kVA and active power data for energy audits and load analysis without visiting the site.
Compare power consumption across multiple RI-F550 meters installed in different distribution boards.
Installation
1Wire the RS485 A and B terminals of the RI-F550 to the corresponding terminals on the ModbusCloud gateway (MCG or MLP series).
2Verify on the RI-F550 front panel that the Modbus slave address, baud rate (9600), parity (none), and stop bits (2) are correctly set.
3Configure the ModbusCloud gateway serial port to match: 9600 baud, no parity, 2 stop bits.
4Import the Rayleigh Instruments RI-F550 template from the ModbusCloud template library and assign the correct Modbus slave address.
5Confirm that live readings for voltage, current, and power appear on the ModbusCloud dashboard before leaving the site.
Things to watch for
01
I am not getting any data from the RI-F550. What should I check first?
Verify that the RS485 wiring polarity (A and B) is correct and that the gateway serial settings match the meter: 9600 baud, no parity, 2 stop bits. Also confirm the Modbus slave address in the template matches the address configured on the meter.
02
Can I change the baud rate on the RI-F550?
Yes, the baud rate can be changed via the meter front panel. If you change it, update the serial port settings on your ModbusCloud gateway to match.
03
The template does not include all the registers I need. Can I add more?
Yes. The RI-F550 supports many additional Modbus registers for harmonics, energy totals, and other parameters. You can add custom registers manually in the ModbusCloud platform using the official Rayleigh Instruments register map.
04
Do I need a termination resistor on the RS485 bus?
If the RI-F550 is the last device on the RS485 bus, or if the cable run exceeds a few meters, a 120 ohm termination resistor between A and B at the end of the bus is recommended to reduce communication errors.
Working with Modbus in your projects?
ModbusCloud is the hardware-plus-software platform that installers use to monitor, visualise and control Modbus devices from one portal. This template is one of hundreds you can use right away.
