Thermia Thermia Modbus TCP template

Thermia

Monitors Thermia Genesis heat pump sensors and compressor data via Modbus

This template reads sensor data and compressor status from Thermia Genesis heat pumps via Modbus TCP or RTU. It supports the Calibra, Calibra Cool, Diplomat, and MEGA models. Key readings include outdoor temperature, brine temperatures, tap water temperatures, supply/return line temperatures, and compressor speed.

Use cases

  • Monitor outdoor, brine, and supply line temperatures on a live cloud dashboard for each Thermia installation.
  • Create an alert when brine inlet temperature drops below a critical threshold, indicating a ground loop issue.
  • Track compressor speed over time to identify efficiency degradation or short-cycling behaviour.
  • Generate weekly performance reports for customers showing tap water and heating circuit temperatures.
  • Compare supply and return line temperatures across multiple Thermia heat pump sites from one overview.
  • Detect external heater demand spikes to evaluate supplementary heating usage and energy costs.

Installation

  1. On the Thermia heat pump, navigate to Settings, then BMS, and enable Modbus TCP or Modbus RTU depending on your connection method.

  2. For Modbus RTU, wire the ModbusCloud gateway to the BM-card (Port MBe) in the electrical cabinet using a shielded twisted pair cable with correct A/B polarity.

  3. For Modbus TCP, connect an Ethernet cable from the RJ45 port on the heat pump display unit to the same network as your ModbusCloud gateway.

  4. Set the Modbus slave address on the heat pump and note the configured baud rate if using RTU (check the BMS settings screen for defaults).

  5. In the ModbusCloud portal, create a new device, select the Thermia template, and enter the IP address or RTU slave address matching the heat pump configuration.

  6. Verify that live readings such as outdoor temperature and compressor speed appear on the dashboard before finalising the installation.

Things to watch for

Which port do I use for Modbus RTU on the Thermia Genesis?

Connect to the BM-card port labelled MBe inside the electrical cabinet. Make sure you use the correct A and B terminal polarity for RS-485.

Where do I enable Modbus on the heat pump?

Open the Settings menu on the heat pump display and navigate to the BMS section. Both RTU and TCP options can be enabled there.

Why does the compressor available gears value look incorrect?

Register address 4 uses a divisor of 9. The ModbusCloud template already applies this scaling, so if you see unexpected values, check that you have not added an extra manual divisor.

Can I use both Modbus TCP and RTU at the same time?

This depends on the Thermia firmware and configuration. In most cases only one protocol is active at a time. Consult the Thermia installation manual for your specific model.
