Gree Versati Heat Pump Modbus RTU template

Versati Heat Pump

Controls and monitors Gree Versati heat pumps via Modbus RTU

This template integrates Gree Versati heat pumps via Modbus RTU. It reads temperatures, operating status, and sensor data while allowing control of on/off state, operating mode, temperature setpoints, and error resets. Compatible with Versati Split, Versati Monoblock, and Versati All-in-One models.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Monitor water inlet and outlet temperatures alongside outdoor temperature on a live cloud dashboard.
  • Remotely switch the heat pump on or off and change operating mode without a site visit.
  • Create an alert when tank control temperature drops below a defined threshold for early fault detection.
  • Adjust heating, cooling, or tank temperature setpoints remotely based on seasonal changes or customer requests.
  • Log unit status and thermostat data over time to identify performance trends and optimize system efficiency.
  • Send an error reset command remotely to restore operation after a non-critical fault occurs.

Installation

  1. Connect the Modbus RTU wiring (A, B, GND) from the Gree Versati heat pump's Modbus port to the RS485 terminal of your ModbusCloud Gateway.

  2. Set the Modbus slave address on the heat pump according to the manufacturer's instructions, and ensure no address conflicts exist on the bus.

  3. Configure the serial port on the gateway to match the heat pump settings: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and the appropriate parity as specified in the Gree documentation.

  4. Import the Gree Versati Heat Pump template from the ModbusCloud template library and assign it to the correct gateway and slave address.

  5. Verify communication by checking that live readings such as unit status, outdoor temperature, and water temperatures appear correctly on the ModbusCloud dashboard.

  6. Test a write operation, for example toggling the on/off register, to confirm that control commands are received and executed by the heat pump.

Things to watch for

Why does the outdoor temperature show an extremely high value instead of a negative number?

The outdoor temperature register at address 118 uses int16 encoding, not uint16. Ensure the register data type is set to int16 in the template configuration. If it is read as uint16, negative temperatures will display as large positive numbers.

What baud rate and serial settings should I use?

The Gree Versati requires 9600 baud for Modbus RTU communication. Confirm data bits (8), stop bits (1), and parity settings match the heat pump configuration. Mismatched serial parameters will result in communication timeouts.

Can I read and write all registers in this template?

No. Registers at addresses 2 through 44 support both read and write operations for setpoints and controls. Registers from address 117 onward are read-only and provide sensor data and status information. Attempting to write to read-only registers will return an error.

Do I need to enable Modbus on the Gree Versati before connecting?

Yes. On some Versati models, the Modbus RTU interface must be explicitly enabled through the unit's service menu or DIP switch settings. Consult the Gree installation manual for your specific model variant.
