Use cases

  • Monitor real-time charging state, power, and energy consumption of Heidelberg Wallbox Energy Control units on a cloud dashboard.
  • Set maximum charging current remotely to implement load balancing across multiple EV chargers at a site.
  • Create alerts when PCB temperature exceeds safe thresholds to prevent hardware damage.
  • Implement solar surplus charging by dynamically adjusting the charging current based on available PV production.
  • Use the remote lock feature to restrict unauthorized charging at shared or commercial parking locations.
  • Track cumulative energy consumption since installation for billing or energy reporting purposes.

Installation

  1. Connect the Modbus RTU wiring (A and B terminals) from the Heidelberg Wallbox Energy Control to the RS485 port on your ModbusCloud Gateway.

  2. Configure the Modbus slave address on the wallbox according to its installation manual, ensuring it does not conflict with other devices on the same bus.

  3. Set the gateway serial port to 19200 baud, odd parity, and 8 data bits to match the wallbox communication settings.

  4. Import the Heidelberg Wallbox Energy Control template from the ModbusCloud template library and assign it to the correct gateway and slave address.

  5. Verify that readings such as charging state, voltage, and power appear on the dashboard, then test a control command like setting the maximum current.

  6. If solar surplus charging is required, configure the surplus formula and ensure the minimum charging current is set to at least 6A, or 10A for vehicles that require it.

Things to watch for

The gateway cannot communicate with the wallbox. What should I check?

Verify that the baud rate is set to 19200 and parity is set to odd (1 stop bit). Also confirm the A and B wiring is not swapped and that the correct Modbus slave address is configured on both the wallbox and the gateway.

Energy readings seem incorrect or show unexpected values. Why?

The energy registers are split across two consecutive Modbus registers (high byte and low byte). The template handles this automatically. If values still look wrong, check that no other template or device is polling the same registers simultaneously.

The wallbox does not start charging even though a current command is sent. What is wrong?

The minimum charging current for the wallbox is 6A. Some vehicles require at least 10A. If the current command is below the vehicle minimum, charging will not start. Increase the maximum current command to at least the required threshold.

Can I use this template with a single-phase EV?

This template is designed for EVs with a 3-phase onboard charger. Single-phase vehicles may not work correctly with the power and current calculations provided.
