INTILION INTILION scalebloc energy (battery) Modbus TCP template

INTILION scalebloc energy (battery)

The INTILION scalebloc energy is an AC-coupled lithium-ion battery storage system for commercial and industrial sites, deployed in a weatherproof IP55 outdoor cabinet. This ModbusCloud template reads the two core operational registers over Modbus TCP: active power at register 5040 (positive for discharge, negative for charge) and system state of charge at register 5002. With these values polled continuously, operators and energy management systems gain the live visibility needed to track dispatch behaviour and verify that the scalebloc is following its configured operating mode.

Use cases

  • Monitor real-time active power to verify the scalebloc is discharging or charging as expected by the EMS.
  • Track state of charge trends over time to detect unexpected capacity loss between charge cycles.
  • Alert on state of charge dropping below a threshold to protect against unplanned deep discharge.
  • Compare active power readings against EMS setpoints to confirm the scalebloc is responding correctly.
  • Report daily energy throughput patterns to support performance review and maintenance planning.

Installation

  1. Ensure the INTILION scalebloc is set to application mode 0 (external setpoints) or any mode that enables Modbus TCP/IP communication, then confirm the IP address via the device web interface or the UCS configuration tool.

  2. Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the same LAN as the scalebloc master unit, using the XF13 Ethernet port on the scalebloc as the external TCP/IP interface.

  3. In the ModbusCloud portal, add the Gateway, import the INTILION scalebloc energy template, and set the unit ID and IP address to match the scalebloc master.

  4. Verify communication by checking that register 5002 (soc) returns a value between 0 and 100 and that register 5040 (power) changes sign when the system switches between charge and discharge.

Things to watch for

Why do power and SOC values appear as large unexpected integers?

The scalebloc transmits all values as integers scaled by a resolution factor documented in the Modbus interface specification. If your portal shows raw counts rather than engineering units, check the scaling factor for each register and apply the correct multiplier. The template sets types to int16 and uint16 respectively, matching the register definitions.

The gateway connects but both registers always return zero. What now?

Confirm the scalebloc is not in a booting or alarm state, as the system will not output valid data during startup or fault conditions. Also verify you are connecting to the XF13 port on the master unit, not a slave unit. Slave units do not expose the external Modbus TCP interface independently.

Register 5040 reads negative when the battery should be exporting. Is that correct?

Yes. According to the INTILION Modbus documentation, a negative value on the active power register means the battery is charging, while a positive value means the system is discharging to the grid or loads. Check whether your energy flow convention matches this sign definition before building alerts or dashboards.

Which Ethernet port on the scalebloc should I connect the Gateway to?

Use port XF13 on the master scalebloc only. Port XF14 is reserved for the energy meter connection or chaining to a preceding slave unit. If multiple scalebloc units are stacked, only the master exposes the external Modbus TCP/IP interface on XF13, which represents the combined system state.
