Lumel Lumel N43 Modbus RTU template

Lumel N43

DIN rail three-phase network meter for voltage, current, power, energy and THD.

The Lumel N43 is a DIN rail network meter that measures voltage, current, power, energy, power factor and THD in three-phase 3-wire and 4-wire networks. This Modbus RTU template reads all measured values, demand values, energy counters and status and lets you change transformer ratios, alarms and communication from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Use cases

  • Show voltage, current and power per phase of a switchboard on a dashboard.
  • Log imported and exported active energy to report consumption per month.
  • Get an alert when voltage THD or the neutral current passes a limit you choose.
  • Watch the averaged active power demand and its maximum against the contracted capacity.
  • Check the status register for a phase sequence error or a spent clock battery.

Installation

  1. Connect the RS485 terminals of the N43 to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, A to A and B to B, with a terminator at both ends of the bus.

  2. On the meter, open the parameter settings and set the Modbus address, the baud rate and the transmission mode, or keep the factory setting of address 1, 9600 baud, 8N2.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address, speed, parity and stop bits and import this template.

  4. Check that the frequency reads about 50 Hz and that the phase voltages match the display of the meter.

  5. Set the current and voltage transformer ratios in the meter so the values read primary amps and volts.

Things to watch for

The meter does not answer on the bus. What should I check?

The factory setting is 8N2, with two stop bits, which many masters do not use by default. Match address, baud rate, parity and stop bits in ModbusCloud, then swap A and B and check the terminator at both ends of the line.

A value suddenly reads 1e20. Is that a fault?

No. The N43 writes 1e20 when a value is outside the measuring range, for example a power factor at almost no load or THD with the frequency outside 48 to 52 Hz.

Why does the active energy counter drop back to zero?

The kWh register counts up to 99999.9 and then starts again, while the overflow register adds one for every 100 MWh. Add both to get the total, or read the energy from the 16-bit pairs at 4048 and up.

Can I change settings from ModbusCloud?

Yes, the transformer ratios, alarms, pulse output, communication, clock and display pages are writable. A new baud rate or address only takes effect after register 4042 is set to 1, and the device in ModbusCloud then needs the new settings too. Writing must be enabled for the gateway first.
