MoistureGuard Senzomatic MHT Modbus RTU template

Senzomatic MHT

Monitors timber moisture, air humidity, and temperature in building structures.

The MoistureGuard MHT is a combined humidity sensor for building structures. It measures timber weight moisture, air humidity, temperature, and dew point via Modbus RTU. This template reads all float32 measurement registers including cavity climate data and electrical resistance values.

Use cases

  • Monitor timber moisture content remotely to detect water ingress in wooden building structures before damage occurs.
  • Create alerts when relative humidity or dew point in the insulation cavity exceeds a defined threshold.
  • Track temperature and humidity trends over time to validate building envelope performance for your customer.
  • Compare electrical resistance readings across multiple MHT sensors to locate the source of a moisture problem.
  • Verify power supply voltage of installed sensors remotely to diagnose wiring or supply faults without a site visit.

Installation

  1. Test each MHT sensor before the site visit using a USB converter and the MoistureGuard desktop application to confirm correct operation.

  2. Connect the MHT sensor data wires (A and B) to the RS485 port on your ModbusCloud Gateway.

  3. Supply the MHT sensor with 12V DC from a suitable power source, ensuring correct polarity.

  4. Set the Modbus gateway serial port to 19200 baud, odd parity, to match the MHT default communication settings.

  5. Assign a unique Modbus slave address to each MHT sensor if multiple sensors share the same RS485 bus.

  6. Import the MoistureGuard MHT template in the ModbusCloud portal and link it to the configured gateway and slave address.

Things to watch for

Why am I not getting any readings from the MHT sensor?

Confirm the baud rate is set to 19200 and parity is set to odd (1 stop bit). Also verify the 12V DC supply is connected and that the A and B data lines are not swapped.

What data format do the registers use?

All measurement registers are float32 (two consecutive 16-bit registers). Ensure your gateway is configured to read 32-bit floats with the correct byte order.

Can I use multiple MHT sensors on one RS485 bus?

Yes. Each sensor must have a unique Modbus slave address. Use the MoistureGuard desktop application to configure the address before installation.

How do I test the sensor before embedding it in the building structure?

Connect the sensor to a PC via a USB-to-RS485 converter and use the MoistureGuard sensor tester application. The converter is optionally supplied with the product.
