Thies CLIMA Clima Sensor US

Ultrasonic weather station for wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, brightness, radiation and precipitation.

The Thies CLIMA Clima Sensor US is a compact ultrasonic weather station that measures wind, air temperature, humidity, air pressure, brightness, global radiation and precipitation on roofs, masts and greenhouses. This Modbus RTU template reads all measured values, the GPS and sun position and the sensor status, and lets you write the averaging period, heating levels, precipitation detection and communication settings from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Use cases

  • Show wind speed, outside temperature, humidity and global radiation from the greenhouse roof on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Get an email alarm when the wind gust exceeds your limit, so you can check that screens and vents have closed.
  • Get an alarm as soon as the station reports precipitation, for example to check roof vents or sun shading.
  • Compare brightness north, east, south and west and global radiation over 365 days of history.
  • Track the sensor supply voltage and wind sensor status in the history to spot supply or measurement problems.
  • Change the averaging period or the precipitation thresholds from the portal without climbing onto the roof.

Installation

  1. Mount the Clima Sensor US vertically on a mast tube of 48 to 49 mm at an open spot without shade, wind lee or moving objects above it, and turn the N marking to true north.

  2. Connect pin L (TXD+, RXD+) to RS485 A and pin K (TXD-, RXD-) to RS485 B of the ModbusCloud Gateway, and terminate both ends of the bus.

  3. Supply 24 V AC or DC on pin E (+) and pin D (-). Variants with cover heating need 24 V ±15 % at about 1.1 A, without heating 6 to 40 V DC is enough.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the slave address and baud rate from the factory settings sheet, by default 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit, and import this template.

  5. Check that wind speed, air temperature and the sensor supply voltage arrive in ModbusCloud.

Things to watch for

The weather station does not answer. What should I check?

Only the Modbus variants leave the factory in Modbus RTU and half duplex mode. Other variants speak the Thies ASCII protocol until the command interpreter is set to Modbus (CI 1) and the duplex mode to half duplex (DM 0), for example with the Thies Device Utility. Then check address and baud rate on the factory settings sheet, swap L and K, and switch on the built-in terminating resistor (BT 1) at the end of the bus.

Why do I see an impossibly high value instead of a measurement?

The station marks an invalid measured value with the largest 32-bit number. Gusts are only calculated with an averaging period of at least 3 seconds. Wind chill, heat index and rain temperature are only valid under their conditions: below 10 °C, above 26 °C with more than 40 % humidity, and with rain above 5 °C. Last Value Error Status shows whether the value read just before was valid.

Why does the station ignore a setting I write?

Settings are protected. Write 4711 to Access Key (1 is enough for the averaging period), then the setting, then 0 to Access Key to store it; without that last step the change is gone after a restart. A new slave address or baud rate applies at once, so update the Modbus device in ModbusCloud right away. Command Interpreter 0 or another duplex mode ends Modbus communication. Leave Software Upload alone.

Why is the relative air pressure equal to the absolute pressure?

The relative pressure is reduced to sea level with the station height. With Station Height 0 m both values are the same. Write the height in metres to Station Height, or let the station take it from GPS with Height Setting Mode; on 4.9200 and 4.9202 it averages the GPS height for 14 days and then stores it. If the station rejects the write, set the height with the Thies Device Utility.

Why does the wind direction show 0 or 360 degrees?

Below 0.1 m/s the direction cannot be determined and the station reports 0. Wind from exactly north is shown as 360. If every direction is off by the same angle, realign the N marking to true north or set North Correction. Brightness Direction is 0 below 10 kLux; under diffuse light use Sun Position Azimuth.
