Thies CLIMA WSC11

Compact weather station for wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, radiation, brightness and precipitation.

The Thies CLIMA WSC11 is a compact weather station that measures wind, air temperature, humidity, air pressure, global radiation, brightness and precipitation on building roofs and greenhouses. This Modbus RTU template reads all measured values, the sun position and GPS time, and lets you write the slave address, baud rate, station height and other station settings from ModbusCloud.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show wind speed, outside temperature, humidity and global radiation from the greenhouse roof on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Get an email alarm when the wind speed exceeds your limit, so you can check that screens and vents have closed.
  • Get an alarm as soon as the station reports precipitation, for example to check roof vents or sun shading.
  • Compare brightness north, east, south and west over 365 days of history to tune shading per facade.
  • Use the sensor status in the history to see when a sensor reported invalid values or the GPS signal was lost.
  • Correct the station height or north alignment from the portal without climbing onto the roof.

Installation

  1. Mount the WSC11 level on a mast with the plug underneath, at an open spot without shadow or wind lee, and turn the N marking to geographic north.

  2. Connect DATA+ (pin 3) to RS485 A and DATA- (pin 4) to RS485 B of the ModbusCloud Gateway. Connect DATA_GND (pin 2) to the bus ground, never to the supply ground, and terminate the bus ends.

  3. Supply the station with 18 to 30 V DC or 18 to 28 V AC. On long cables, check that the voltage drop still leaves enough supply voltage at the station.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with slave address 1, 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit, and import this template. A station supplied by Priva needs 115200 baud.

  5. Give the station about three minutes for its first GPS data, then check that wind speed, air temperature and the date arrive in ModbusCloud.

Things to watch for

The weather station does not answer. What should I check?

Check address and speed first. Modbus variants ship with address 1 at 9600 baud 8N1, variant 4.9056.10.701 with address 10, and 4.9056.10.801 with address 30 at 19200 baud. A WSC11 supplied by Priva for a greenhouse climate computer is set to 115200 baud. Then swap DATA+ and DATA-, and make sure DATA_GND is not connected to the supply ground. An ASCII variant (.000) only answers Modbus after switching its command interpreter.

My own Modbus tool shows nonsense values. Why?

Every value takes two registers, starting at the number shown in the table, for example 30001 and 30002 for wind speed, high word first. A tool that subtracts one from that number reads across two values and shows nonsense. Frost, ice, snow and precipitation intensity only exist on the 4.9056.11 variants; other variants answer those addresses with an error.

Why does the station ignore a setting I write?

Most settings are protected. Write 234 to Password first and then the setting within two minutes. Settings go to permanent memory that wears out after about 100,000 writes, so never write them from a recurring automation. A new slave address applies at once, so update the Modbus device in ModbusCloud right away. Writing 0 to Command Interpreter switches the station to ASCII and it stops answering Modbus.

Why is the relative air pressure equal to the absolute pressure?

Relative pressure is calculated from the station height, and the default height is 0 m. Write the height of the station in metres to Station Height, or 3001 to use the GPS height. For 0.1 hPa accuracy the height must be known to within 0.8 m, and the GPS height can be off by up to 30 m.

Why does the wind direction show 0 or 360 degrees?

Without wind the direction cannot be determined and the station reports 0. Wind from the north is shown as 360. The mean values use the averaging interval, 10 minutes by default; set it to 0 for instantaneous values. If every direction is off by the same angle, realign the N marking or set the north correction.
