Add a Modbus device from the template library
You pick the energy meter in the library, and the template already holds its registers.

Intro and demo board
Welcome to ModbusCloud. My name is Lorenzo and today I will show you how to add a Modbus device. On this board, we have an energy meter connected to the ModbusCloud Gateway.
Opening the library
Then I'll grab the laptop. On my laptop, I navigate to the Gateways menu and then select the specific gateway that I am currently using. Then, I will click on the Add Modbus device button and carefully choose the Library option from the menu.
Finding the Eastron SDM120
In this specific case, I have an Eastron SDM120 device connected to the system. That is this one right here. I will click on that to select it.
Setting Modbus RTU and the address
Finally, I set the communication protocol to Modbus RTU, assign it address 1, and verify that everything is configured correctly. This is Modbus address 1 and the read interval is 300 seconds.
Registers and read interval
For this demo, I'm going to keep only the voltage, current, and power readings. I'll remove the rest of the data, and then I will set the sampling interval to exactly one second.
Heater on, live values
And we can already see data coming in. If I turn on the heater now, we see the power and current increase.

What a template does
- A template holds the registers of one device type: address, function, data type and unit.
- The library holds 1155 devices. You search by brand, model or category.
- After adding the device you choose which registers to keep and how often the gateway reads them. Over the cable that can be every second, the default is 5 minutes.
- The history stores one value per register per minute.
- If your device is not in the library, we build the template free of charge as soon as we have its registers. You can also create your own template in the portal.
