Eaton Eaton Power Defense PXR Modbus RTU template

Eaton Power Defense PXR

Breaker trip unit that reports status, currents, voltages, power and energy of a Power Defense breaker.

The Eaton Power Defense PXR is the electronic trip unit of Power Defense molded case circuit breakers that protects the circuit and measures current, voltage, power and energy in the switchboard. This Modbus RTU template reads breaker status, loads, energy, counters and the event log, and lets you change relay, demand, clock and Modbus settings from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Use cases

  • Show the status and phase currents of every outgoing breaker in a switchboard on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Send an email alert when a breaker trips or when the cause of status changes away from normal.
  • Track energy and peak demand per feeder over the 365 days of history to see which group uses the most.
  • Watch phase current unbalance and THD to find overloaded or polluted circuits before they cause trouble.
  • Follow trip and operation counters and the breaker health value to plan maintenance of the breaker.

Installation

  1. Check that the PXR style has integrated Modbus RTU and that the trip unit gets 24 V DC auxiliary power.

  2. Wire RTU_D(+) and RTU_D(-) as a shielded twisted pair to RS485 A and B of the ModbusCloud Gateway, connect RTU_GND and put 120 ohm termination at both ends of the bus.

  3. Set the Modbus address, baud rate and parity on the trip unit display or with Power Xpert Protection Manager; the default is address 2, 19200 baud, even parity.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device on the Gateway with the same address and settings and import this template.

  5. Check that breaker status, phase currents and frequency come in and match the trip unit display.

Things to watch for

The breaker does not answer on Modbus at all. What should I check?

Integrated Modbus only works with 24 V DC auxiliary power on the trip unit and only on styles with Modbus. Then check address, baud rate and parity on the display (default 2, 19200, even), swap RTU_D(+) and RTU_D(-) if needed and make sure the bus is terminated at both ends.

Why do currents and power show huge or random numbers?

The trip unit sends 32-bit values low word first by default, which this template expects. If someone changed the float or fixed point word order registers to high word first, set them back or the values will be scrambled.

Why do some registers stay empty or return an error?

Not every PXR model measures everything: voltage, power, demand and harmonics need a PXR 25 or a style with voltage sensing, and ground current only exists on units with ground fault protection. Unused registers return an error or an invalid value on those models.

Can I change settings or reset the breaker from ModbusCloud?

Display, relay, demand, clock and Modbus settings can be written; the settings registers show group 0 by default. Writing setpoints needs the password first. Remote control commands such as reset trip use three words that the trip unit only accepts together in one write, so test each command carefully before you rely on it.
