Hoval Hoval District Heating Modbus TCP template

Hoval District Heating

Controls Hoval TopTronic E district heating systems via Modbus TCP or RTU.

This template connects Hoval TopTronic E district heating stations to ModbusCloud via Modbus TCP or RTU. It reads temperatures, energy totals, flow rates and valve positions, and allows control of heating circuit setpoints and operating modes for up to three circuits plus hot water.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Monitor outdoor temperature, flow temperatures and hot water temperatures on a live dashboard for each building.
  • Adjust room setpoints for heating circuits HK1 to HK3 remotely without visiting the site.
  • Track cumulative thermal energy consumption over time to verify billing or efficiency targets.
  • Create an alert when the primary valve position deviates from expected range for more than 15 minutes.
  • Compare flow and return temperatures across multiple Hoval district heating stations in a portfolio view.
  • Switch heating circuit operating modes remotely to adapt to seasonal or occupancy changes.

Installation

  1. Install the Hoval Connect Modbus Gateway (article 6049501) and connect it to the Hoval TTE system via the internal CAN bus.

  2. Configure the Hoval Connect Gateway for Modbus TCP (Ethernet) or Modbus RTU (RS-485), noting the IP address or slave address.

  3. Wire the ModbusCloud Gateway to the same network segment for Modbus TCP, or connect via RS-485 for Modbus RTU.

  4. In the ModbusCloud portal, add a new device and select the Hoval District Heating template from the template library.

  5. Enter the Modbus TCP IP address and port, or the RTU slave address and serial parameters matching the Hoval Connect Gateway configuration.

  6. Verify that live values for outdoor temperature and flow temperatures appear on the dashboard before completing the installation.

Things to watch for

Why do the energy total registers show incorrect values?

Energy registers use a HighByte/LowByte split across two consecutive Modbus addresses (e.g. 5480 and 5481 for MWh). The template handles this automatically, but if you have modified register mappings manually, ensure both addresses are read and combined in the correct byte order.

Do I need additional hardware besides the ModbusCloud gateway?

Yes. The Hoval TopTronic E system uses an internal CAN bus. You must install the Hoval Connect Modbus Gateway (article number 6049501) to translate CAN bus data to Modbus TCP or RTU before the ModbusCloud gateway can communicate with the system.

What baud rate and serial settings should I use for Modbus RTU?

Consult the Hoval Connect Modbus Gateway documentation for the default serial settings. Common defaults are 19200 baud, 8 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit, but verify this in the Hoval configuration tool as settings may vary per project.

Can I control all three heating circuits if my installation only has one or two?

Yes. The template includes registers for HK1 through HK3. Unused heating circuits will simply return default or zero values. You can hide unused registers in the ModbusCloud dashboard to keep the interface clean.
