Hoval Hoval Heating & Cooling Modbus TCP template

Hoval Heating & Cooling

Control Hoval TopTronic E heating and cooling systems via Modbus TCP or RTU.

This ModbusCloud template controls and monitors Hoval TopTronic E heating and cooling systems via the Hoval Connect Modbus Gateway (part 6049501) over Modbus TCP or RTU. It reads flow and return temperatures for up to two heating circuits, outdoor temperature, domestic hot water temperatures, electrical and thermal power, current and annual COP, and total energy per mode. Writes are supported for setpoints, operating modes, and DHW control.

Use cases

  • Show the full heating system at a glance with outdoor temperature, flow and return on every circuit, and current electrical vs thermal power.
  • Automatically reduce flow temperature during warm afternoons or when a room thermostat signals satisfied demand.
  • Log annual performance factor and total energy per mode for subsidy applications or your own reports.
  • Trigger an alert when the COP drops below an expected threshold, a sign of a refrigerant or air-flow problem.
  • Remotely activate or deactivate cooling mode on HC1 or HC2 based on room temperature or outside forecast.

Installation

  1. Install the Hoval Connect Modbus Gateway (6049501) on the TopTronic E system and connect it to the LAN for Modbus TCP, or to the RS485 bus for Modbus RTU.

  2. Configure the gateway address and baudrate (RTU) or IP (TCP) per the Hoval installation guide.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a matching Modbus TCP or RTU device and import the Hoval Heating and Cooling template.

  4. Verify readings in the first minute. If total energy values look wrong, your firmware may still use the old 16-bit layout and you should switch to the older Energy Management template.

Things to watch for

Total energy registers return impossibly large numbers. Firmware version issue?

Yes. Hoval 3.0.0 changed the total energy registers from two 16-bit high and low to single 32-bit values. If your firmware is older than 3.0.0 you will see overflow. Either update the TopTronic E firmware or switch to the older Energy Management Template.

Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP: which one should I choose?

Both work equally well. Choose TCP when the Hoval cabinet is near a network switch, and RTU when you want to run a single twisted pair to the ModbusCloud gateway. The register map is identical.

I can read everything but writing setpoints has no effect. Why?

Some Hoval installations lock external setpoint writes at commissioning. Ask the commissioning engineer to unlock the external control permission on the TopTronic E menu. Without that, Modbus writes are accepted silently but not applied.
