Hoval Hoval Energy Management Modbus TCP template

Hoval Energy Management

Manages Hoval heat pump energy via Smart Grid offsets and PV integration

This template connects Hoval heat pumps running TopTronic E to ModbusCloud via Modbus TCP or Modbus RTU. It reads temperatures, energy totals, COP, and operating states while providing Smart Grid trigger and setpoint offsets for DHW, heating buffer, and room temperature across up to three heating circuits.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Monitor outdoor temperature, flow temperatures, and COP of Hoval heat pumps on a live cloud dashboard.
  • Trigger Smart Grid mode to shift heat pump operation into periods of PV surplus production.
  • Create alerts when DHW or buffer tank temperatures drop below expected thresholds for more than 15 minutes.
  • Track thermal and electrical energy totals over time to calculate seasonal performance factors.
  • Adjust room temperature setpoint offsets for up to three heating circuits based on energy tariff schedules.
  • Log operating hours and switching cycles to plan preventive maintenance intervals for heat pump compressors.

Installation

  1. Connect the Hoval Modbus TCP Gateway to your local network, or wire the Hoval Modbus RTU Gateway to the RS485 port on your ModbusCloud Gateway.

  2. Enable the Modbus interface on the Hoval TopTronic E controller and configure the correct Modbus slave address.

  3. For Modbus RTU, set the baud rate, parity, and stop bits on both the Hoval gateway and the ModbusCloud gateway to matching values.

  4. Import the Hoval Energy Management template in the ModbusCloud platform and assign it to your gateway.

  5. Verify that live readings such as outdoor temperature and heat pump status appear correctly on the ModbusCloud dashboard.

  6. Test the Smart Grid trigger and confirm that the heat pump acknowledges the switch-on recommendation.

Things to watch for

What happens if the ModbusCloud connection is lost?

The Hoval heat pump continues to operate on its own internal logic. The Energy Management template only sends switch-on recommendations and setpoint offsets, so a communication failure does not affect normal heating or hot water operation.

Why does my Smart Grid offset seem to have no effect?

The Hoval TopTronic E ignores setpoint offsets when the outdoor temperature is above the configured heating limit. Check the heating limit setting on the controller and verify that the heat pump is actually in heating mode.

What data format do the energy registers use?

Thermal and electrical energy totals are transmitted as uint32 or int32 values in MWh. Make sure your register configuration uses 32-bit reads and the correct byte order to avoid misinterpreted values.

Can I use this template with both Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU?

Yes. Use the Hoval Modbus TCP Gateway for a direct network connection, or the Hoval Modbus RTU Gateway connected to the RS485 port of your ModbusCloud gateway. Select the matching protocol when configuring the template.
