Invertek Optidrive P2

High performance frequency drive for pumps, fans, compressors and machines, with speed, torque and status.

The Invertek Optidrive P2 is a high performance variable frequency drive for induction, permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors on pumps, fans, compressors and machines. This Modbus RTU template reads frequency, current, torque, power, temperature and trip status, and lets you start, stop and reset the drive and write speed, torque and parameters from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Put frequency, current and power of every P2 drive in a plant on one dashboard.
  • Send an e-mail when the drive status shows a trip, or when heatsink temperature passes a limit you choose.
  • Keep a history of output torque and current to see when a pump or conveyor starts to need more effort.
  • Change the speed reference or the PID setpoint from ModbusCloud without a visit to the site.
  • Compare DC bus voltage and power over weeks to spot supply problems or a changing load.

Installation

  1. Connect pin 7 (RS485-), pin 8 (RS485+) and pin 3 (0 V) of the RJ45 port in the drive wiring enclosure to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway. Terminate both ends with 120 ohm.

  2. Set address P5-01, baud rate P5-03 and data format P5-04 on the drive (default 1, 115200 baud, no parity, 1 stop bit). For control over Modbus set P1-12 to 4.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address and serial settings and import this template.

  4. Check that output frequency, DC bus voltage and drive status come in with plausible values.

Things to watch for

The drive does not answer. What should I check?

Compare P5-01, P5-03 and P5-04 with the settings in ModbusCloud. Use pins 7 and 8 of the RJ45 port, not 4 and 5 which carry Optibus for keypads and PC, and connect the 0 V on pin 3. A fieldbus option module in the option slot switches Modbus RTU off.

The motor does not start when I write the control word.

Modbus control works only with P1-12 set to 4 and no fieldbus module installed. The drive also needs its enable input and both Safe Torque Off inputs. Set bit 0 to run; a reset with bit 2 must be cleared again once the fault is gone.

Why does a parameter read 500 when the display shows 50.0?

Parameters with one decimal place are sent multiplied by ten. The template applies this factor for those parameters. A few parameters with two or three decimals are shown raw; compare them with the drive display before you write.

The drive trips on loss of communication.

P5-05 sets the watchdog time, default 1.0 s, and P5-06 what the drive does when no valid message arrives. Poll at least one register faster than that, set a longer time, or set P5-05 to 0 to switch the watchdog off.

What should I keep in mind when writing parameters?

A written parameter takes effect in the drive at once and changes how the motor runs. Read the current value first, write one parameter at a time and check the display. Some parameters cannot be changed while the drive runs, and P4-02 starts an autotune immediately.
