Invertek Optidrive E3

Variable frequency drive for pumps, fans and conveyors, with speed control, motor data and trip status.

The Invertek Optidrive E3 is a compact variable frequency drive that controls the speed of motors on pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors. This Modbus RTU template reads frequency, current, power, temperatures, status and trip codes, and lets you start, stop and reset the drive and write the speed setpoint and parameters from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show frequency, motor current and power of every pump or fan drive on one dashboard.
  • Send an e-mail when the trip code changes from No fault, for example on over current or DC bus over voltage.
  • Keep a history of motor current and heatsink temperature to spot a pump or bearing that starts to wear.
  • Change the speed setpoint of a fan or pump from ModbusCloud without a visit on site.
  • Read the kWh meter and run hours per drive to report energy use and plan maintenance.

Installation

  1. Connect pin 7 (RS485-), pin 8 (RS485+) and pin 3 (0 V) of the RJ45 port on the drive to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway. Terminate both ends of the bus.

  2. Set the drive address and baud rate in P-36 (default address 1, 115200 baud). For control over Modbus also set P-12 to 3 or 4.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address and serial settings (8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit) and import this template.

  4. Check that output frequency, DC bus voltage and drive status show plausible values.

Things to watch for

The drive does not answer. What should I check?

Compare address and baud rate in P-36 with the settings in ModbusCloud; the factory speed is 115200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. Check that you use pins 7 and 8 of the RJ45 port, not 4 and 5, which are for the keypad and PC. Plug the cable into the drive only, never into an Ethernet port.

I write the control word but the motor does not start.

The drive only takes run commands over Modbus when P-12 is 3 or 4, and digital input 1 must be closed as hardware enable. With P-31 set to a terminal start option the keypad and fieldbus start commands are ignored. Bit 0 is run, bit 2 resets a fault.

The drive trips with a Modbus comms loss fault.

P-36 index 3 sets a watchdog: when no valid message arrives within that time the drive trips or coasts to stop. Poll at least one register faster than the timeout, or set the watchdog to 0 when the drive does not need it. P-63 decides whether messages for other addresses also count.

Several drives on one bus answer at the same time.

Every drive leaves the factory with address 1. Give each drive its own address in P-36 index 1 before you connect them to the same RS485 line, and add each one in ModbusCloud as a separate device.

What should I keep in mind when writing parameters?

Parameter values go straight into the drive and change how the motor runs. Some parameters use an internal scaling, so read the current value first and compare it with the drive display before you write. Some cannot be changed while the drive is running, and P-52 starts an autotune at once.
