KSB KSB PumpDrive 2 Modbus RTU template

KSB PumpDrive 2

Pump frequency inverter with closed-loop control on pressure, flow, level or temperature.

The KSB PumpDrive 2 is a frequency inverter that controls the speed of centrifugal pumps on pressure, flow, level or temperature, alone or in a multiple pump system. This Modbus RTU template reads speed, power, pressures, flow, alerts and energy, and lets you start and stop the system and set the setpoint and speed from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Use cases

  • Show speed, power, discharge pressure and flow of a booster set on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Send an email alert when Pump Alerts is not 0 or the discharge pressure drops below a threshold.
  • Track energy use and operating hours in the history to plan service and compare pump sets.
  • Adjust the pressure setpoint remotely when the customer reports too little pressure on the top floor.
  • Reset messages or trigger a pump changeover from ModbusCloud after a fault has been fixed on site.

Installation

  1. Fit the Modbus RTU module in a free slot of the PumpDrive 2, tighten the four screws and cover unused M12 connections.

  2. Wire the M12 connector to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway: pin 4 to B (D+), pin 2 to A (D-), pin 3 to GND, and terminate the last device.

  3. On the drive, set address, baud rate and parity in menu 3-12-2 (default 1, 19200, even) and leave the pump address range at pump 1.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus RTU device with the same address and serial settings and import this template.

  5. Check that Speed and Pump Status show plausible values while the pump runs.

Things to watch for

The drive does not answer at all. What should I check?

Check address, baud rate and parity in menu 3-12-2 on the drive against the device settings in ModbusCloud; even parity uses 1 stop bit, no parity uses 2. Swap A and B if needed, terminate the last device, and look at the LEDs on the module: red means a Modbus fault, green means the field bus side is active.

Why do some registers return an error while others work?

The PumpDrive 2 only answers requests for two registers at a time, because every value is 32 bits. Reading one register on its own is refused. Registers of pumps that are not configured in the system also stay empty.

Why does writing a setpoint or start command have no effect?

The drive only follows the field bus when the control point is set to field bus, and an actual value from the bus needs Actual Value Source on field bus. Writing from ModbusCloud is off per gateway by default and is switched on by request on the control tab. Change setpoints in small steps and check the pressure.

How do I read the other pumps of a multiple pump system?

Each pump has its own block of the same values, 256 addresses further per pump. Which block a drive uses is set in menu 3-12-2-4 on every drive. Copy the pump registers in ModbusCloud and shift the addresses for each extra pump.
