KNV Nibe (KNV) Heating & Cooling (F-Series) Modbus RTU template

Nibe (KNV) Heating & Cooling (F-Series)

Controls Nibe (KNV) F-Series heat pumps via Modbus RTU gateway

This template integrates KNV (Nibe) F-Series heat pumps via a Modbus 40 RTU gateway. It reads temperatures, compressor state, alarm codes, and operation modes. It also allows control of heating curve, hot water mode, room sensor setpoints, and operation mode.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Monitor outdoor, supply, return, brine, and hot water temperatures on a live cloud dashboard for your customer.
  • Create an alert when a compressor alarm code is reported so the installer can respond quickly.
  • Adjust heating curve offset and room sensor setpoints remotely to optimize comfort without a site visit.
  • Integrate the heat pump into an energy management strategy by switching operation modes based on PV surplus.
  • Track degree minutes and compressor run hours over time using historical data charts to reduce unnecessary cycles.
  • Set hot water operation mode remotely to boost or reduce domestic hot water production on demand.

Installation

  1. Connect the Nibe Modbus 40 RTU gateway to the heat pump's internal bus according to the Nibe installation manual.

  2. Use the Nibe Modbus Manager software to configure exactly 20 data points, then transfer the configuration to the heat pump via USB stick.

  3. Wire the RS-485 connection (A, B, GND) from the Modbus 40 gateway to the RTU port of your ModbusCloud Gateway.

  4. Set the baud rate and parity on the ModbusCloud gateway to match the Modbus 40 gateway settings (typically 9600 baud, 8N1).

  5. Import the KNV F-Series template in the ModbusCloud platform and assign the correct Modbus slave address.

  6. Verify communication by checking that outdoor temperature and compressor state values appear on the cloud dashboard.

Things to watch for

Why does the template show Modbus TCP even though only RTU is supported?

The Nibe Modbus 40 gateway may be auto-detected as TCP in some configurations, but it only supports Modbus RTU. Always connect via RS-485 to the RTU port of your ModbusCloud gateway.

Why am I not receiving any data from the heat pump?

The Modbus 40 gateway requires pre-configuration of exactly 20 data points via the Nibe Modbus Manager software. If this step was skipped or the USB transfer failed, the gateway will not respond. Re-run the configuration and transfer process.

Can I use this template for Nibe S-Series or Greenline models?

No. The register maps differ significantly between the F-Series, S-Series, and Greenline ranges. Use the dedicated S-Series or Greenline template available in the ModbusCloud library.

What baud rate and parity should I use?

The default setting for the Modbus 40 gateway is typically 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit (8N1). Confirm this matches both the Modbus 40 gateway and the ModbusCloud gateway configuration.
