Saia Burgess ALE3
Three-phase 65 A energy meter that measures energy, power, voltage and current per phase.
The Saia Burgess ALE3 is a three-phase energy meter for currents up to 65 A that counts active energy per tariff or per direction in distribution boards. This Modbus RTU template reads energy, power, voltage, current and power factor per phase and lets you reset the partial counters from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.
Use cases
- Track energy use per tenant or per group on a ModbusCloud dashboard with 365 days of history.
- Compare import and export on the bidirectional meter to see how much PV power a building uses itself.
- Get an email when the error register reports a missing phase or a reversed current direction.
- Set an alert on total active power to spot a load that stays on outside working hours.
- Reset the partial counter at the start of a period and read the consumption for that period.
Installation
Wire RS485 A and B from the meter to the ModbusCloud Gateway and terminate both ends of the bus, because the meter has no built-in termination.
Make sure phase 1 and N are connected; the Modbus interface only works with phase 1 present.
Set the Modbus address on the meter: hold the right key for 3 seconds, then step through the address with the arrow keys.
In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address, 9600 baud and 8E1, and import the Saia Burgess ALE3 template.
Wait 30 seconds after powering up the meter and check that voltage per phase shows around 230 V.
Things to watch for
The meter does not respond at all. What should I check?
Check that phase 1 is connected, because the interface needs it. Wait 30 seconds after power-up. Check A and B, the termination at both ends and that the address in ModbusCloud matches the address on the display. The meter adapts to the baud rate and parity of the first messages it sees, so keep all devices on the bus at the same settings.
Why does the energy value look 100 times too high?
The energy counters count in hundredths of a kWh over two registers with the high word first. The template applies the 0.01 factor. If you built your own registers, check the word order and the scale.
Some registers return an error when I read many at once.
The meter answers at most 20 registers per request and replies with an illegal data address error above that. Keep the registers you read on this meter to blocks of up to 20, or read fewer registers per device.
How do I reset the partial counter by writing?
Write 0 to the partial counter. The meter only accepts the write multiple registers command and both registers of the counter must be written in one message. The total counters cannot be reset. Writing a new Modbus address takes effect immediately, so update the address in ModbusCloud right after.
