Installation

1. 1Enable Modbus RTU on the SofarSolar Hybrid Inverter by navigating to the communication or Modbus section in the inverter menu and setting a unique slave address between 1 and 63.
2. 2Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the inverter RS485 port using a twisted-pair cable: wire A+ and B- terminals correctly, keeping cable runs short and terminating the bus if the Gateway is the last device.
3. 3In the ModbusCloud portal, add your Gateway, import the SofarSolar Hybrid Inverter template, and assign the slave address configured on the inverter.
4. 4Verify communication by checking that the power and soc registers show live values in the portal; if readings are absent, try swapping the A and B wires on the RS485 connection.

Things to watch for

Why does the power register always read zero or garbage?

Register 525 returns battery charge or discharge power as a signed int16 with a scaling factor of 0.01 kW. If your polling tool applies no scaling, values will appear ten or one hundred times larger than expected, or may look like noise. Confirm the data type is int16 and apply the correct scaling in your portal configuration.

The Gateway connects but no register values appear. What should I check?

First confirm the slave address in the portal matches the address set on the inverter. SofarSolar hybrid inverters default to slave address 1, but this can be changed via the LCD menu. Also verify the RS485 baud rate is 9600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, which is the standard for this device family.

Communication is intermittent. What causes this on RS485?

Intermittent RS485 communication is usually caused by swapped A and B wires, missing bus termination, or excessively long or unshielded cable runs. Try swapping the A and B connections at the Gateway end first, as polarity reversal is a common wiring error. Add a 120-ohm termination resistor at each end of a long bus run.

The SOC register shows a value above 100. Is this a fault?

A value well above 100 on the soc register typically indicates a data type mismatch. Confirm you are reading address 528 as uint16 with function code 3. If byte order is reversed at the application layer, the raw bytes may be swapped, producing an implausible result. The SofarSolar protocol uses big-endian byte order.
