SofarSolar HYD 3…6K-EP (battery)
The SofarSolar HYD 3...6K-EP is a single-phase hybrid inverter with integrated battery storage management, designed for residential and small commercial PV self-consumption systems. This Modbus RTU template targets the battery mode control register, letting you switch the HYD 3...6K-EP between its operating modes, such as self-use, time-of-use, or manual control, directly from the ModbusCloud Gateway without touching the inverter display. Automating mode changes through the portal removes the need for on-site visits when energy tariffs or grid conditions change.

Use cases
- Switch the HYD 3...6K-EP to time-of-use mode automatically before an off-peak charging window starts.
- Verify that a remote mode-change command was accepted by confirming the inverter behaviour matches the written value.
- Alert when the battery mode differs from the site energy plan, indicating an unexpected local override.
- Compare inverter operating modes across multiple HYD 3...6K-EP sites to audit energy management consistency.
- Track mode-change events in the portal history to diagnose unexpected battery charge or discharge patterns.
Installation
Enable Modbus RTU on the HYD 3...6K-EP: navigate to the inverter's LCD menu under Advanced Settings, locate the communication or Modbus section, and confirm RS485 is active with the correct baud rate (9600, 8N1).
Wire the RS485 bus: connect the ModbusCloud Gateway's A+ and B- terminals to the corresponding RS485 pins on the inverter's COM port, keeping the cable run as short as practical and adding a 120-ohm termination resistor at each end of the bus.
In the ModbusCloud portal, add a new device, import the SofarSolar HYD 3...6K-EP (battery) template, and set the Modbus unit ID to match the address configured on the inverter (default is 1).
Spot-check the connection by reading any accessible holding register in the portal console; then test a controlled write to register 4368 with a known mode value and confirm the inverter panel reflects the change.
Things to watch for
Why does writing to register 4368 have no effect?
The SofarSolar HYD series uses a shadow register mechanism: written values do not take effect until a separate Write Control register is set. Confirm that your automation sequence also triggers the Config_Control register after writing the mode value, otherwise the inverter ignores the new setting.
The gateway connects but register 4368 returns a Modbus exception. Why?
Register 4368 is a write-only control register and will return an illegal-function or illegal-data exception if you attempt to read it with FC3. Use only FC16 (write multiple registers) as specified in the template. Also confirm the unit ID in the portal matches the inverter's configured RS485 address.
RS485 communication is unreliable or drops out intermittently. What should I check?
Check A+/B- polarity first: reversed wires are a common cause on SofarSolar inverters. Use 9600 baud, 8N1. Keep the cable under 100 metres, avoid parallel runs with AC power cables, and fit 120-ohm termination resistors at both ends of the bus segment.
Is it safe to write any integer value to the battery mode register?
No. Only write documented mode values as defined in the SofarSolar Modbus protocol specification. Writing an undefined value may put the inverter into an unexpected operating state, potentially triggering protection limits, disabling discharge, or invalidating the warranty. Always validate the target mode value before sending the write command.
