Use cases

  • Monitor primary and secondary temperatures of a district heating substation on a live cloud dashboard.
  • Adjust room temperature setpoints and heating corrections for all four heating circuits remotely.
  • Create an alert when an error status byte indicates a fault condition on the RM360 controller.
  • Log heat meter energy and flow rate data over time to verify district heating consumption.
  • Switch the main operating mode or hot water tank modes for TC1 and TC2 without an on-site visit.
  • Compare flow and return temperatures across heating circuits to detect balancing issues.

Installation

  1. Connect the Aqotec RM360 to your local network via its Ethernet port and verify that Modbus TCP is enabled in the controller settings.

  2. Connect your ModbusCloud Gateway to the same local network, ensuring it can reach the RM360 IP address on the configured Modbus TCP port.

  3. Note the IP address and Modbus TCP port of the RM360, and configure these in the ModbusCloud gateway settings.

  4. Import the Aqotec RM360 Modbus TCP template from the ModbusCloud template library into your project.

  5. Verify communication by checking that temperature readings and status values appear correctly on the ModbusCloud dashboard.

  6. Test write access by adjusting a heating circuit setpoint and confirming the change is reflected on the RM360 controller display.

Things to watch for

Why do some temperature values appear as incorrect or very large numbers?

The RM360 uses float32 registers that span two consecutive Modbus addresses. Ensure the byte order and word order settings in the gateway match the RM360 configuration. The template is preconfigured for the correct data types, but custom modifications may introduce errors.

Which Modbus TCP port does the RM360 use?

The default Modbus TCP port is typically 502. Verify this in the RM360 network settings. If a different port has been configured, update the gateway connection settings accordingly.

Can I use this template if I only have two heating circuits installed?

Yes. The template includes registers for HC1 through HC4 and both hot water tanks. Unused circuits will simply return zero or default values. You can hide unused registers in your ModbusCloud dashboard.

Do I need a specific firmware version on the RM360 for Modbus TCP to work?

Modbus TCP support depends on the RM360 firmware and hardware revision. Check the Aqotec documentation or contact Aqotec support to confirm your unit supports Modbus TCP communication.
