Installation

1. 1Enable Modbus communication on the FoxESS inverter: for the H3 Smart, the TCP Modbus server is active by default on port 502 via the built-in LAN or WiFi interface; for the H3-Pro, connect an RS485-to-LAN adapter to the EMS RS485 pins on the inverter communication connector.
2. 2Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the same local network as the inverter (or RS485-to-LAN adapter), and confirm you can reach the inverter IP on port 502 using a Modbus poll tool before proceeding.
3. 3In the ModbusCloud portal, add a new device, import the FoxESS H3-Pro/Smart Series (battery) template, and set the unit ID to 247, which is the default FoxESS Modbus slave address.
4. 4Spot-check the soc register (37612) in the portal live-data view and compare the displayed percentage against the inverter front panel or FoxESS app to confirm the connection is reading correctly.

Things to watch for

Why does the battery power register return zero or nonsense values?

The power register at address 39237 is typed as int32 (two consecutive 16-bit words). Some H3-Pro firmware versions return the high word as zero, making a full 32-bit read produce incorrect values. If you see zero or implausibly large numbers, check that your gateway is reading both words with the correct byte and word order. Cross-check against the inverter display to confirm the actual power value.

The gateway connects but no live values appear in the portal. What now?

Confirm the inverter IP address is reachable on port 502 from the gateway subnet. For H3-Pro with an RS485-to-LAN adapter, verify the adapter is configured in transparent or RTU-to-TCP bridge mode. The H3 Smart's built-in TCP server can be disrupted after certain firmware updates; check the FoxESS community release notes for your firmware version and restart the inverter if needed.

Bulk register reads cause IllegalAddress errors on the H3-Pro. Why?

The H3-Pro has register ranges that must not be read in a single bulk request; spanning them triggers exception code 0x02 (IllegalAddress). The ModbusCloud Gateway polls each configured register individually, which avoids this issue. If you are testing with a third-party tool, request registers one at a time rather than in contiguous blocks across different range boundaries.

Is it safe to write to the limitsoc register remotely? What should I be aware of?

Writing to register 46611 (limitsoc) changes the inverter's minimum on-grid battery reserve. Setting this too low may cause the battery to discharge below the manufacturer's recommended depth, potentially affecting battery longevity or triggering protection shutdowns. Always test a new setpoint value manually and confirm the inverter accepts it before deploying automated writes from the portal.
