Helios KWL EC easyControls 3.0

Heat recovery ventilation controller that reports air temperatures, humidity and CO2 and sets profiles.

The Helios KWL EC easyControls 3.0 is the controller of Helios heat recovery ventilation units that runs the fans, bypass and ventilation profiles in homes and small buildings. This Modbus RTU template reads fan speed, air temperatures, humidity, CO2 and fault state, and lets you set the profile, boost timer, fan speeds and supply air temperature from ModbusCloud.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show fan speed, supply and extract air temperature and CO2 of a Helios unit on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Get an email when Device Fault Active turns on or humidity rises above a threshold you set.
  • Track outdoor, supply and exhaust air temperature in the 365-day history to see how well heat is recovered.
  • Switch a unit between the home and away profile remotely from the portal.
  • Start boost ventilation for 30 minutes after a meeting or event by writing the boost timer.
  • Check the filter change date and bypass state before a maintenance visit.

Installation

  1. Check the Modbus settings of the unit on the KWL-BE Touch panel or in the web server: address 1, 19200 baud, even parity by default.

  2. Connect RS485 A and B of the unit controller to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, with termination at both ends of the bus.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address, speed and parity, and import this template.

  4. Check that Fan Speed and Outdoor Air Temperature show plausible values; subtract 273.15 from the kelvin value for degrees Celsius.

Things to watch for

The unit does not answer. What should I check?

Compare address, baud rate and parity with the Modbus settings on the KWL-BE Touch panel or in the web server; the default is address 1, 19200 baud, even parity, 1 stop bit. Swap A and B and add a termination resistor at both ends of the bus.

Why do temperatures show around 290?

The unit sends temperatures in centikelvin. The template shows them in kelvin, so 293.15 means 20 °C. Subtract 273.15 for degrees Celsius. A value of 0 or 65535 on a sensor register means no sensor is connected.

Can my older KWL EC unit with Modbus TCP use this template?

No. Units with easyControls 2.x use a different Modbus TCP protocol in which values are requested by variable name. This template is for units with easyControls 3.0 and the RS485 Modbus RTU interface.

How do I change the ventilation through Modbus?

Write 0 or 1 to Ventilation Profile for home or away, or minutes to Boost Timer Remaining to start boost. Fan speed and supply temperature are set per profile. Writing registers is off per Gateway until it is enabled on request; write only values you understand.

Can several units share one bus?

Yes, give each unit its own Modbus address on the panel or in the web server, and add each one as a separate Modbus device in ModbusCloud with this template.
