Legrand EMDX3 412052

Three-phase panel measuring unit for voltage, current, power, energy and harmonics.

The Legrand EMDX3 412052 is a three-phase multifunction measuring unit that measures voltage, current, power, energy and harmonics in a switchboard door. This Modbus RTU template reads all measured values and counters and lets you set transformer ratios, alarm output settings and counter resets from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Use cases

  • Show voltage, current and power per phase of a switchboard on a ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Get an email alert when a phase current or the total power goes above a threshold you set.
  • Keep a year of energy counter history to compare consumption per week or month.
  • Watch voltage and current THD to see when harmonic load in the building increases.
  • Check the alarm status of the meter output and switch the output remotely.

Installation

  1. Connect the RS485 terminals of the meter to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, A to A and B to B, and terminate both ends of the bus with 120 ohm.

  2. Set a unique Modbus address, the baud rate and the parity on the meter.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device on the Gateway with that address and serial settings and import this template.

  4. Check that the CT and VT ratio read the values of your transformers, otherwise set them in the meter.

  5. Compare voltage and current in ModbusCloud with the display of the meter.

Things to watch for

The meter does not answer. What should I check first?

Check that address, baud rate and parity in ModbusCloud match the meter, and that A and B are not swapped. Only one master may poll the bus, and both ends of a long bus need a 120 ohm termination.

Why is the power value 100 times too high or too low?

The meter reports power in 0.01 W while CT ratio times VT ratio is below 5000, and in whole watts above that. The template uses 0.01. With large transformers, set the scale of those power registers to 1, or use the signed power registers, which are always in watts.

Why do the energy counters jump in large steps?

The energy counters of the measures block count in steps that depend on CT times VT, from 10 Wh up to 1,000,000 Wh. For exact energy use the Low and High energy registers, which give Wh and MWh, and add them.

Why does writing a setting have no effect?

The meter only accepts settings after the access key 23205 in Enable Remote Writing. Write the setting, write the access key again and then 10 to Save Configuration. The setup blocks are documented as one block, so writing a single word can be refused. Change settings with care, a wrong CT ratio changes every reading.
