Use cases

  • Monitor real-time charging power and session energy on a live dashboard for each customer site.
  • Create an alert when EVSE state indicates a fault or when the wallbox temperature exceeds a safe threshold.
  • Log cumulative charged energy per station to generate monthly consumption reports for billing.
  • Control solar-optimized charging by adjusting charging current and phase switching based on PV surplus.
  • Remotely enable or disable charging via the charging release register for access management.
  • Track per-phase voltage and current to detect load imbalance across multiple installations.

Installation

  1. Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the MENNEKES AMTRON 4You 300 RS-485 terminals using a twisted-pair cable with correct A/B polarity.

  2. Set DIP switches 4, 5, and 7 of bank S1 on the wallbox to ON and restart the wallbox to enable solar-controlled Modbus satellite mode.

  3. Configure the gateway serial port to match the wallbox defaults: 57600 baud, 8 data bits, 2 stop bits, Modbus address 50.

  4. If dynamic phase switching is required, connect the MENNEKES configuration cable and enable the option in the MENNEKES configuration tool before commissioning.

  5. Import the MENNEKES AMTRON 4You 300 template in the ModbusCloud portal and assign it to the correct gateway and Modbus address.

  6. Verify that readings such as voltage, current, and EVSE state appear on the ModbusCloud dashboard.

Things to watch for

The wallbox does not respond to Modbus commands. What should I check?

Verify that DIP switches 4, 5, and 7 on bank S1 are set to ON and that the wallbox has been restarted afterward. Also confirm the baud rate is set to 57600 with 2 stop bits, and that the Modbus address matches (default 50).

Charging stops unexpectedly after a few seconds of external control.

The heartbeat register at address 3328 must receive the value 0x55AA at least every 10 seconds. If this cyclic write is interrupted, the wallbox reverts to standalone mode. ModbusCloud writes registers at most once per minute, so it cannot keep up this heartbeat. Controlling this wallbox through ModbusCloud is therefore not possible, while reading its values works.

Dynamic phase switching does not work even though I send the requested phases command.

Phase switching must first be activated via the MENNEKES configuration cable and configuration tool. Without this activation, the wallbox ignores phase switch requests over Modbus. This feature is only available on the 11 kW variant.

What firmware version is required for Modbus RTU support?

The wallbox firmware must be at least version 2.0 (March 2024). MENNEKES recommends using the latest version of the configuration tool (v2.2) to update firmware. The current wallbox firmware is v2.2 (July 2025).
