Use cases

• Monitor outdoor, flow, return, and buffer temperatures of a Novelan heat pump on a live cloud dashboard.
• Set heating, cooling, and warm water operation modes remotely without visiting the installation site.
• Create an alert when warm water tank temperature drops below the configured target for more than 15 minutes.
• Track heat pump operating hours over time to plan preventive maintenance intervals.
• Adjust warm water target temperature remotely based on seasonal demand or occupancy schedules.
• Detect abnormal system states and notify the end customer or service team automatically.

Installation

1. 1Purchase the Modbus TCP license USB stick from your Novelan partner and install it in the heat pump controller.
2. 2Download and run the Novelan GLT software to activate the Modbus TCP server on the WPR-C controller.
3. 3Connect the ModbusCloud gateway (MCG or MLP series) to the same local network as the Novelan heat pump.
4. 4Note the IP address and Modbus TCP port configured on the heat pump controller.
5. 5Import the Novelan Heating and Cooling template in the ModbusCloud platform and enter the IP address and port of the heat pump.
6. 6Verify that temperature readings and system state appear correctly on the ModbusCloud dashboard before leaving the site.

Things to watch for

Why can I not connect to the Novelan heat pump over Modbus TCP?

The Modbus TCP server is not enabled by default. You need to purchase a USB stick with a license from a Novelan partner and use the Novelan GLT software to activate the server on the WPR-C controller.

Can I use Modbus RTU instead of Modbus TCP?

No. The Modbus RTU interface on Novelan heat pumps is reserved for internal service purposes. This template uses Modbus TCP only.

My Novelan model does not show cooling controls. Is the template wrong?

Some Novelan models support heating only and do not offer a cooling mode. The cooling registers will not respond on those units. This is expected behavior.

What network configuration is required for the gateway?

The ModbusCloud gateway and the Novelan heat pump must be on the same local network or have a routed connection. Ensure no firewall is blocking the configured Modbus TCP port between the two devices.
