Novelan Heating & Cooling Split
Monitors and controls Novelan split heat pump heating and cooling systems via Modbus
This template connects to Novelan (alpha innotec) Heating & Cooling Split heat pumps via Modbus RTU. It reads key temperatures (supply, return, outdoor, brine, hot water) and alarm status, and allows control of heating, cooling, hot water mode, holiday mode, and alarm reset.

Use cases
- Monitor supply, return, and outdoor temperatures on a live dashboard to verify heat pump performance remotely.
- Create an alert when the alarm status activates so you can respond to faults before the customer notices.
- Switch between heating and cooling mode remotely when seasonal conditions change.
- Enable holiday mode for a customer's heat pump directly from the ModbusCloud platform without a site visit.
- Track brine inlet and outlet temperatures to detect ground loop performance degradation over time.
- Compare hot water temperature trends against setpoints to identify efficiency losses or legionella risks.
Installation
Install the dedicated Novelan Modbus Split module between the heat pump and the Modbus gateway, following the module's wiring instructions.
Connect the Modbus RTU lines (A, B, GND) from the Modbus Split module to the RS-485 port on your ModbusCloud Gateway.
Configure the serial port on the gateway to 9600 baud, matching the heat pump's default Modbus RTU settings.
Set the correct Modbus slave address on the heat pump or Modbus Split module as specified in the manufacturer documentation.
Import the Novelan Heating & Cooling Split template in the ModbusCloud platform and assign it to the configured gateway and slave address.
Verify communication by checking that supply temperature and alarm status values appear correctly on the ModbusCloud dashboard.
Things to watch for
Why do I get no response from the heat pump over Modbus RTU?
The Novelan Modbus Split module must be installed between the heat pump and the gateway. Without this module, the heat pump does not expose a Modbus interface. Verify the module is powered and correctly wired to the RS-485 bus.
What baud rate should I use for this template?
The default baud rate is 9600. Make sure the gateway serial port and the Modbus Split module are both set to the same baud rate, parity, and stop bit configuration.
Will this template work with the latest Novelan or alpha innotec models?
This template is pending revision due to product series changes. Some register addresses may differ on newer models. Check the current register map in the manufacturer documentation and compare it with the template before deployment.
Can I control heating and cooling simultaneously?
The template provides separate Allow Heating and Allow Cooling controls. Whether the heat pump supports simultaneous operation depends on the specific model and system configuration. Consult the Novelan installation manual for your unit.
