Qcells Q.HOME ESS HYB-G3 (battery)
The Qcells Q.HOME ESS HYB-G3 is a modular residential hybrid battery storage system, available in single-phase and three-phase variants, combining a hybrid inverter with a lithium-ion battery pack. This Modbus RTU template reads battery power (charge and discharge) and state of charge, and writes three battery mode control registers to allow external energy management systems to set operating behaviour. Connecting via the RS485 port of the Q.HOME ESS HYB-G3 gives installers direct, real-time visibility into storage performance and programmatic mode control from the ModbusCloud portal.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.
Use cases
- Monitor battery state of charge continuously to detect capacity degradation across seasons.
- Track real-time charge and discharge power to verify the battery responds to solar surplus correctly.
- Alert on sustained battery discharge during midday hours, which may indicate inverter misconfiguration.
- Write battery mode registers remotely to switch between self-use, forced charge, and grid-priority modes.
- Report daily charge and discharge cycles to compare actual storage throughput against design expectations.
Installation
Enable Modbus RTU on the Q.HOME ESS HYB-G3 inverter by navigating to Advanced Settings and confirming the RS485 baud rate is set to 19200, 8N1, with unit ID 1.
Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the inverter RS485 port using the RJ45 COM port on the inverter, wiring pin 4 (A+) and pin 5 (B-) of a standard Cat5 cable to the Gateway RS485 terminals.
In the ModbusCloud portal, add your Gateway, import the Qcells Q.HOME ESS HYB-G3 battery template, and assign unit ID 1 to match the inverter setting.
Verify the connection by spot-checking the soc register (address 301, FC4): a plausible percentage value confirms the RS485 link is active and the template is correctly mapped.
Things to watch for
Why does the soc register always read zero or 65535?
A value of 0 or 65535 (0xFFFF) usually indicates a communication fault rather than a real reading. Confirm the baud rate on the inverter display matches 19200, 8N1 and that the A/B polarity of the RS485 wiring is correct. Swapping the A and B leads is the most common cause of all-zero or max-value readings.
The Gateway connects but the power register shows no data. Why?
Register 297 is read with function code 4 (input registers). If you accidentally poll it with FC3 (holding registers), the inverter will return an exception. Confirm the template is loaded without modification and that no other Modbus master is simultaneously polling the same RS485 bus, as the inverter rejects concurrent connections.
Writing batterymode registers causes a timeout or no echo. What now?
The Q.HOME ESS HYB-G3 RS485 port uses FC16 (write multiple registers) for battery mode control but does not always echo a confirmation frame within the standard timeout. A firmware update from Qcells has been reported to resolve write timeouts on battery mode registers. Verify your firmware is current before troubleshooting wiring.
Is it safe to write battery mode registers frequently via the portal?
Use caution: the batterymode_a, batterymode_b, and batterymode_d registers control operating mode and capacity limits. Writing unsupported values or writing at very high frequency can cause the inverter to reject commands, trip protection thresholds, or behave unexpectedly. Always test mode changes manually and confirm the inverter accepts the value before automating writes.
