Senmatic Senmatic AMI Penta Weather Modbus TCP template

Senmatic AMI Penta Weather

Weather data on the AMI Penta irrigation controller: outdoor temperature, humidity, sun, wind and rain.

The Senmatic AMI Penta is an irrigation and fertilizer controller for greenhouses that uses outdoor weather to start and adjust irrigation. This Modbus TCP template reads outdoor temperature, humidity, sun, light, wind, rain, snow and pressure from unit ID 200 into ModbusCloud.

Use cases

  • Plot outdoor sun and temperature next to the irrigation volume to see how the weather drives water use.
  • Get an email when rain or snow is reported, for example to check an outdoor nursery.
  • Keep a year of weather history from the controller for comparisons between seasons.
  • Spot a failing weather station when wind or sun values stop changing.

Installation

  1. Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the Ethernet network of the AMI Penta. Senmatic recommends a separate network for its controllers.

  2. Look up the IP address of the AMI Penta under Unit setup, IP address. It is in the 10.4.1.xxx range with subnet 255.255.255.0.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with Modbus TCP, that IP address, port 502 and unit ID 200, and import this template.

  4. Check that outdoor temperature and sun come in and match the weather screen of the AMI Penta.

  5. For the sensors, mixer and alarms, add the same controller with unit ID 0 and the template Senmatic AMI Penta System.

Things to watch for

Which unit ID belongs to which data of the AMI Penta?

Unit ID 0 holds the system data, the valve table and the list of hand-started valves, each in its own template. Unit ID 200 holds the weather data. Every irrigation group answers on its own unit ID together with the recipe of the same number: group 1 and recipe 1 on unit ID 1, group 2 and recipe 2 on unit ID 2.

The Gateway gets no answer from the AMI Penta. What should I check?

Check that the Gateway reaches the IP address set under Unit setup on the AMI Penta, usually 10.4.1.xxx with subnet 255.255.255.0, and that the Modbus device uses port 502 and unit ID 200. Senmatic recommends a separate Ethernet network for its controllers, so connect the Gateway to that network.

In which units are the values and times shown?

EC, pH, flow, volume and pressure come as plain numbers in the units the AMI Penta uses itself, so compare one value with the display of the controller. Durations and times of day are shown in seconds: a start time of 06:00 reads 21600 s. Yes or no values read 1 or 0.
