SofarSolar SOFAR 5…24KTL-G3 (grid)
The SofarSolar SOFAR 5…24KTL-G3 is a three-phase on-grid PV inverter covering 5 to 24 kW, used in residential and small commercial solar installations. This ModbusCloud template connects via Modbus RTU over RS485 and reads the inverter's grid interface: total active power, per-phase currents and active power for phases A, B, and C, and the cumulative energy export counter. With per-phase visibility and a running energy total, installers and building owners can verify grid balance, detect phase asymmetry, and track long-term generation performance directly from the ModbusCloud portal.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.
Use cases
- Monitor total active grid power in real time to verify the inverter is delivering its rated output.
- Track per-phase active power on phases A, B, and C to detect load imbalances across the three-phase supply.
- Alert on unexpected sign changes in the power register to catch unplanned import events during daylight hours.
- Compare cumulative energy export readings over weeks and months to identify capacity degradation trends.
- Verify phase currents after installation to confirm correct CT orientation and wiring before site handover.
Installation
Enable Modbus RTU on the SOFAR 5…24KTL-G3 by navigating to the communication or Modbus section of the inverter's LCD menu, then confirm the slave address (default 1) and baud rate (default 9600, 8N1).
Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the inverter's RS485 port: wire the Gateway's A+ terminal to the inverter's RS485A pin and the Gateway's B- terminal to the RS485B pin, keeping cable length under 1000 m and using a twisted-pair cable.
In the ModbusCloud portal, add a new device, select the SofarSolar SOFAR 5…24KTL-G3 (grid) template, and set the unit ID to match the slave address configured on the inverter's LCD (typically 1).
Verify the connection by spot-checking the power register in the live data view during daylight hours; a positive non-zero reading confirms successful communication.
Things to watch for
The gateway shows no data even though it is connected. Why?
The SOFAR G3 series uses a different register addressing scheme from older KTL-X models. Confirm you are using the G3-specific template and not a generic SofarSolar template. Also check that the baud rate on the inverter LCD matches the Gateway configuration (9600, 8N1 by default).
All values read zero or the gateway reports a timeout at night. Is this normal?
Yes. The SOFAR 5…24KTL-G3 is an on-grid inverter that enters sleep mode when PV input drops below threshold, typically after sunset. The inverter stops responding to Modbus requests during sleep. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a wiring fault.
The 32-bit energy register returns an implausible value. What is wrong?
The 32-bit energy register uses big-endian byte order: the high byte arrives first, followed by the low byte. If your gateway or reading tool is set to little-endian, the value will appear corrupted. Set the byte order in the ModbusCloud portal to big-endian for this register.
RS485 is wired but communication fails intermittently. What should I check?
Intermittent failures on RS485 are usually caused by missing termination resistance, reversed A/B polarity, or excessively long cable runs without shielding. Confirm A+ and B- polarity at both ends, add a 120-ohm termination resistor if the Gateway is at the end of the bus, and ensure the cable shield is grounded at one end only.
