Installation

1. 1Enable Modbus RTU on the inverter: on the LCD panel, navigate to the communication or settings menu and confirm the Modbus address (default 1, range 1 to 63) and baud rate (default 9600, 8N1).
2. 2Wire the RS485 bus: connect A+ and B- from the inverter COM port to the corresponding terminals on the ModbusCloud Gateway, and fit a 120-ohm termination resistor at the last device on the bus.
3. 3In the ModbusCloud portal, add the ModbusCloud Gateway, import the SofarSolar SOFAR 80...136KTL (battery) template, and set the unit ID to match the inverter's configured Modbus address.
4. 4Verify connectivity by triggering a test read on the batterymode register (address 4368) in the portal and confirming a valid integer response before issuing any write commands.

Things to watch for

My write to register 4368 returns an error. What is wrong?

The SofarSolar Modbus User Guide specifies that writes to address 4368 must start exactly at that address with a write length of exactly 1 register using function code 0x10. Writing a different length or starting offset will be rejected. Confirm the template uses FC 16 and length 1, and check firmware is current for your model.

The gateway connects but register 4368 shows no response. What now?

Check the RS485 wiring polarity: A+ and B- can be inadvertently swapped, which prevents any communication. Also verify the Modbus address in the portal matches the address set on the inverter LCD. The default baud rate is 9600/8N1; a mismatch will produce timeouts.

Is there a risk of damaging the inverter by writing the wrong mode value?

Yes. Register 4368 is a live operational setpoint that changes inverter battery behaviour immediately. Writing an unsupported or out-of-range value can trigger protection faults or put the battery into an unintended state. Always confirm the valid mode values for your specific model firmware before writing, and test in a controlled window, not during peak production.

Communication worked, then stopped after a firmware update. Why?

SofarSolar has changed Modbus register behaviour and protocol variants across firmware versions for the KTL and HYD series. After a firmware update, re-check the Modbus protocol family applicable to your serial number, confirm the baud rate has not been reset, and update the inverter firmware to the latest version before re-establishing communication.
