Ziehl-Abegg Ziehl-Abegg ECblue Modbus RTU template

Ziehl-Abegg ECblue

EC fan motor: speed, current, power, temperatures and faults, with speed control over RS485.

The Ziehl-Abegg ECblue is an EC external rotor motor that drives fans in air handling units, cooling and ventilation systems. This Modbus RTU template reads speed, current, power, temperatures and fault status, and lets you set the speed, control mode and speed limits from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show speed, current and input power of every fan in an air handling unit on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Send an email alert when the error status of a fan is no longer 0.
  • Track the IGBT and inside temperature over the summer to find fans that run hot.
  • Lower the speed setpoint of a fan remotely during the night or at low load.
  • Compare input power and speed in the history to spot a clogged filter or a worn bearing.

Installation

  1. Connect RS485 A and B of the ECblue to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway and terminate the bus at both ends.

  2. Give every fan its own Modbus address in COM Parameter or with the Ziehl-Abegg setup tool; the factory address is 247.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus RTU device with the fan address, 19200 baud, 8 data bits, even parity and 1 stop bit, and import this template.

  4. Check that Speed and Line Voltage show plausible values. Set Control Mode to bus control before you write a speed setpoint.

Things to watch for

The fan does not answer on the bus. What should I check?

Check the settings: 19200 baud, 8E1 and address 247 from the factory. Swap A and B if nothing answers, and terminate the bus at both ends. Several new fans all have address 247, so give each one its own address before you connect them together.

My write to a setting is ignored. Why?

Most settings need a PIN protection level. Write 1234 (level 1) or 0010 (level 2) to PIN Input first, then write the setting within about 15 minutes. Read the register before and after the write so you see whether the value was taken.

The fan ignores my speed setpoint.

Speed Control only works when Control Mode is set to bus control (mode 1, 2 or 3) and the fan is enabled, through D1 or through Control bit 0 with bus enable switched on in Control Mode. Also check Min. Speed and Max. Speed.

The fan runs at a fixed speed after a bus failure.

That is the communication watchdog. When it is on, the fan switches to a fault or a fixed speed after the set time without messages. Make sure the master writes often enough, or change the watchdog mode and time.

How do I read the temperatures correctly?

IGBT, inside and chip temperature are signed values in 0.1 °C steps, so 200 means 20.0 °C. The template applies this scale, so the values in ModbusCloud are already in °C.
