ABB ABB ACS355 Modbus RTU template

ABB ACS355

Compact frequency converter: speed, current, power and faults, with control word and all parameters.

The ABB ACS355 is a compact frequency converter that controls the speed of motors in machines, pumps, fans and conveyors. This Modbus RTU template reads speed, current, power, faults and counters, and lets you write the control word, references and drive parameters from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show speed, current and power of each drive on a dashboard per machine or pump station.
  • Get an email alarm when a fault word is not zero or the drive temperature gets too high.
  • Track energy and run time counters in the history to plan maintenance.
  • Change the speed reference or a ramp time remotely when the process needs it.
  • Compare motor current over weeks to spot a pump or fan that is starting to struggle.

Installation

  1. Fit the FMBA-01 Modbus adapter on terminal X3 and connect its EIA-485 terminals A and B to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, with termination at both ends of the bus.

  2. Set 9802 COMM PROT SEL to STD MODBUS and set 5302 station ID, 5303 baud rate and 5304 parity, then power cycle the drive.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address and serial settings and import this template.

  4. Check that output frequency and DC bus voltage come in, then set 1001 or 1103 to COMM only if the drive should be controlled from the bus.

Things to watch for

The drive does not answer on the bus. What should I check?

Check that 9802 is set to STD MODBUS and that 5302, 5303 and 5304 match the ModbusCloud settings. The drive takes new communication settings only after a power cycle. Then check A and B on the FMBA-01 and the termination at both ends of the bus.

Why do some values show ten times too high or too low?

Each parameter has its own fieldbus scaling, for example 1 = 0.1 Hz or 1 = 0.1 A. Speed references and limits use 0.1 Hz in scalar control and 1 rpm in vector control, depending on 9904 MOTOR CTRL MODE, so those registers are shown as raw values.

My parameter changes are gone after a restart. Why?

Parameter writes over Modbus are not stored permanently. Write DONE to 1607 PARAM SAVE after your changes, or the drive returns to the stored values after a power cycle.

What should I watch out for when writing registers?

The control word and references only act when 1001, 1002, 1102 or 1103 select COMM, and writing them can start or stop the motor. Some parameters cannot be changed while the drive runs. Change one setting at a time and check the result on the drive.
