ABB ABB UMC100.3 Modbus RTU template

ABB UMC100.3

Motor controller for MCCs: motor current, thermal load, trips and run commands.

The ABB UMC100.3 is a universal motor controller that protects, switches and monitors low-voltage motors in motor control centres and machines. This Modbus RTU template reads motor current, thermal load, run state, warnings and trips, and lets you start, stop and reset the motor from ModbusCloud.

Use cases

  • Show motor current, thermal load and run state of every feeder in an MCC on one dashboard.
  • Get an alarm by email when a motor trips on overload, phase loss or earth fault.
  • Track motor current and active power in the history to spot pumps or fans that start to wear.
  • Reset a tripped motor or switch it off remotely after checking the cause.
  • Watch the time to trip and the thermal load to see when a motor runs close to its limit.

Installation

  1. Fit the MRP31.0 interface on the UMC100.3 or on an SMK3.0 kit and connect Data A and Data B to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, with 120 ohm termination at both bus ends.

  2. On the UMC100-PAN panel, go to Communication, Modbus RTU, and set the bus address and baud rate.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the same address and speed and import this template.

  4. Check that the run state and motor current come in when the motor runs, then set up dashboards and alarms.

Things to watch for

The controller does not answer. What should I check?

Check that address and baud rate on the UMC100-PAN match the device in ModbusCloud. The interface detects parity and stop bits itself. Swap Data A and Data B if needed and check the 120 ohm resistors, because the MRP31.0 has no built-in termination. The bus LED flashes green while there is no connection to a master.

The motor current shows 100 while the motor runs normally. Is that right?

Yes. The current is given as a percentage of the rated current Ie set in the controller, not in ampere. 100 means the motor draws its rated current. Check the rated current setting if the values look too high or too low.

How do I start or reset the motor from ModbusCloud?

Write 1 to Cmd Run Forward Opening or Cmd Run Reverse Closing to start, to Cmd Off to stop and to Cmd Fault Reset after a trip. The controller only follows bus commands when it is in remote or auto mode. Make sure the motor can start safely before you send a run command.

Can several controllers share one bus?

Yes. Give every UMC100.3 its own bus address on its panel and use the same speed on all of them. Add each controller as a separate Modbus device in ModbusCloud.
