B+GE-TECH B+GE-TECH WS100 (pv) Modbus RTU template

B+GE-TECH WS100 (pv)

The B+GE-TECH WS100 is a single-phase, MID-certified bidirectional energy meter designed for DIN rail installation in residential and commercial electrical panels. In the PV variant configured here, the ModbusCloud template reads active power at address 260 and cumulative energy at address 280 via Modbus RTU over RS485. The ModbusCloud Gateway connects to the meter's RS485 terminals and forwards both registers to your portal for live PV yield monitoring and historical energy logging. With only two focused registers, the template is lightweight and suited to production-metering roles where power and total yield are the primary data points.

Use cases

  • Monitor real-time PV output power to detect shading or inverter faults during daylight hours.
  • Track cumulative energy yield over weeks and months to verify system performance against design targets.
  • Alert on sustained zero-power readings during daylight to identify disconnected strings or blown fuses.
  • Compare daily energy totals across multiple WS100-metered PV strings to spot underperforming circuits.
  • Report monthly PV generation figures automatically from the portal for tenant or landlord billing.

Installation

  1. Verify the WS100 has an RS485 interface (type -1943 or -19L3) and confirm the default Modbus RTU settings: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, unit ID 1.

  2. Connect the WS100 RS485 A/B terminals to the corresponding A/B terminals on the ModbusCloud Gateway using a twisted-pair cable; keep the cable run under 1000 m and add a 120-ohm termination resistor at each bus end if required.

  3. In the ModbusCloud portal, add a new Gateway, import the B+GE-TECH WS100 (pv) template, and assign the correct Modbus unit ID matching the meter's configured slave address.

  4. Spot-check the live reading on the power register (address 260) against the LCD display on the meter to confirm communication is working correctly.

Things to watch for

The power register returns zero even when the PV system is generating.

Confirm the meter is wired in the correct current direction for import or export. The WS100 is bidirectional, so reversed CT or line polarity can result in negative values being reported as zero when read as a signed 32-bit integer with an unexpected byte or word order. Check that your gateway is reading big-endian 32-bit values, consistent with the WS100 register map.

No data appears in the portal after the template is assigned.

Verify physical RS485 wiring: A to A and B to B between the Gateway and the WS100. Confirm the baud rate, parity, and stop bits on the meter match your gateway configuration. The WS100 default is 9600 baud, 8N1. If multiple devices share the bus, ensure each has a unique unit ID and check for missing termination resistors causing signal reflection.

The energy register value looks far too large or too small.

The WS100 stores energy as a 32-bit integer with an implied scaling factor. Depending on firmware version, the raw value may represent watt-hours or hundredths of a kilowatt-hour. Cross-check the raw register reading against the LCD display to confirm the scale, and adjust your portal unit mapping accordingly. Do not reset the non-resettable main energy counter on the device.

Register reads fail intermittently, especially with multiple meters on the bus.

The WS100 internal measurement cycle is approximately one second, which limits how frequently it can respond to Modbus polls. Increase the poll interval in the portal to at least 2 seconds per device. On a multi-drop RS485 bus, increase inter-frame delay and ensure only one master (the ModbusCloud Gateway) is actively polling.
