Danfoss Danfoss VLT HVAC Basic Drive FC 101 Modbus RTU template

Danfoss VLT HVAC Basic Drive FC 101

HVAC frequency converter for fans, pumps and compressors, over built-in Modbus RTU.

The Danfoss VLT HVAC Basic Drive FC 101 is a frequency converter that controls the speed of fans, pumps and compressors in buildings. This Modbus RTU template reads frequency, current, power, temperature, energy and alarms, and lets you start, stop and set the speed, ramps, limits and PI setpoints from ModbusCloud.

Send your device list

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show output frequency, motor current and power of every fan and pump drive on a ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Get an email alert when the alarm word is no longer 0 or the heat sink temperature passes a limit.
  • Keep 365 days of kWh counter and running hours history to compare consumption per fan or pump.
  • Change the PI setpoint of a pressure or temperature loop remotely without visiting the plant room.
  • Start, stop or change the speed of a fan from an automation on a time schedule or the energy price.

Installation

  1. Connect terminals 68 (P+) and 69 (N-) of the drive to RS485 A and B on the ModbusCloud Gateway and terminate the bus at both ends, on the drive with dip switch S801.

  2. Set 8-30 Protocol to Modbus RTU, then 8-31 Address, 8-32 Baud Rate and 8-33 Parity/Stop Bits.

  3. For control over Modbus, set 8-01 Control Site and 8-02 Control Source to the FC port, and 3-15 Reference 1 Source to Local bus reference.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device (RTU) with the same address and serial settings, for example 1, 19200 baud, 8E1, and import this template.

  5. Check that output frequency and motor current match the display of the drive.

Things to watch for

The drive does not answer. What should I check?

Check that 8-30 is set to Modbus RTU and that address, baud rate and parity in 8-31 to 8-33 match the device in ModbusCloud. Changing the protocol can change the baud rate, so check 8-32 again. Then swap A and B and check the termination switch S801.

Why does a 32-bit value look wrong?

Many readouts, such as frequency, power and motor voltage, are 32-bit values over two registers with the high word first. The template reads them that way. If you read only the first register, you get the high word, which is usually 0.

How do I read one element of an array parameter?

Array parameters such as 3-10 Preset Reference or 5-40 Function Relay share one address. Write the index to holding register 9 first; all following reads and writes of array parameters then go to that element.

What should I keep in mind when writing parameters or the control word?

Coil 65 decides whether parameter writes go to RAM only (0) or also to EEPROM (1); keep it at 0 for values you change often. The control word and bus reference only act when 8-01, 8-02 and 3-15 allow it. Change motor data and limits only when you know the installation.
