DENT Instruments DENT Instruments PowerScout 12 HD Modbus TCP template

DENT Instruments PowerScout 12 HD

Multi-circuit submeter that measures current, voltage, power, and energy on up to 12 CT channels.

The DENT Instruments PowerScout 12 HD is a networked multi-circuit power submeter that measures up to four three-phase or twelve single-phase circuits in the electrical panels of commercial and industrial buildings. This Modbus TCP template reads current, voltage, power, power factor and energy per channel and per element, and lets you set CT ratings, service type and pulse inputs or clear energy totals from ModbusCloud.

Use cases

  • Show live kW, current and voltage per circuit on a ModbusCloud dashboard, on a computer or in the browser on a phone.
  • Keep 12 months of kWh history per circuit and compare tenants, floors or machines in Trends.
  • Email a scheduled PDF report with imported, exported and net kWh per element.
  • Get an email alarm when 15 minute demand or a channel current passes a threshold you set.
  • Get notified when the voltage alarm status or phase check status of the meter changes.
  • Clear peak demand or energy totals remotely at the start of a billing period.

Installation

  1. Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway to the same local network as the Ethernet port of the PowerScout 12 HD.

  2. Give the meter a fixed IP address. It uses DHCP by default; set a static address on the display, in the web app or with ViewPoint HD.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device with the IP address of the meter, port 502 and unit ID 1 for element A, and import this template.

  4. Repeat for every element in use: unit ID 2 for element B, 3 for C and 4 for D.

  5. Check that current, voltage and kWh come in and match the values on the meter display or in the web app.

Things to watch for

The meter does not answer on Modbus TCP. What should I check?

Check that the ModbusCloud Gateway and the meter are in the same subnet and that the IP address is right. With DHCP the address can change after a power cycle, so give the meter a static address. The Modbus port is fixed at 502 and element A answers on unit ID 1.

Why do I only see the values of three channels?

Each element of three channels has its own Modbus address. Unit ID 1 is element A, 2 is B, 3 is C and 4 is D. Add a Modbus device per element with this template. Pulse inputs, network settings and identification are the same on every address.

A channel shows negative power. What is wrong?

The CT is probably mounted the wrong way round or paired with the wrong voltage. Turn the CT around or set CT Sign to Reversed for that channel, and check CT Voltage Reference. The phase check status values show the result of the meter's own phase check per CT.

Can I change CT settings or clear totals from ModbusCloud?

Yes. CT, service type, pulse input and alarm settings are writable, and the clear commands take the value 1234. Network and serial changes only take effect after you write 1234 to Reset Processor. Write CT settings with care: they change every reading of that channel.

The energy totals suddenly dropped to zero. Why?

The accumulators were cleared with a clear command, ViewPoint HD or the web app. Time Since Reset shows how many seconds ago that happened. The history from before the reset stays in ModbusCloud.
