eGauge eGauge Energy Meter Modbus TCP template

eGauge Energy Meter

Measures 3-phase voltage, frequency, energy, and power for residential or commercial panels.

Modbus TCP template for eGauge energy meters (MG4015 and MG4030). Reads RMS voltage, DC voltage, line frequency, cumulative energy, instantaneous power, and on-board temperature across up to three phases. Suitable for residential and commercial panel monitoring.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Monitor three-phase RMS voltage and line frequency on a live dashboard to verify power quality at a commercial site.
  • Track cumulative energy consumption per circuit and generate monthly usage reports for billing or auditing.
  • Create an alert when voltage on any phase drops below or exceeds acceptable limits for more than five minutes.
  • Compare instantaneous power across multiple panels to identify load imbalances in a three-phase installation.
  • Log on-board temperature readings to detect potential overheating of the metering equipment.
  • Use historical energy data to validate solar self-consumption against grid import for energy consultants.

Installation

  1. Connect your ModbusCloud Gateway to the same local network as the eGauge meter, ensuring both devices can communicate over Modbus TCP on port 502.

  2. Log in to the eGauge web interface and open the Modbus Map page to verify the register addresses assigned to each measurement point.

  3. Import the eGauge Energy Meter template into your ModbusCloud project and set the IP address of the eGauge device in the gateway configuration.

  4. Cross-check the register addresses in the template against the Modbus Map and adjust any addresses that differ due to the order of register creation on the eGauge.

  5. If using an eGauge Pro (MG4030 / EM4030) with more measurement channels, add extra Modbus inputs in the template to cover the additional registers.

  6. Verify that live readings on the ModbusCloud dashboard match the values shown in the eGauge web interface before finalizing the installation.

Things to watch for

Why do my register addresses not match the template defaults?

The eGauge assigns Modbus register addresses dynamically based on the order measurement points are created in its web interface. Always consult the Modbus Map in the eGauge web interface and update the template registers accordingly.

Why are energy values incorrect or extremely large?

Energy registers use int64 encoding, which spans four Modbus registers per value. Make sure the data type in ModbusCloud is set to int64 and that the register start address is correct. A wrong data type or offset will produce nonsensical readings.

Do I need to modify the template for the eGauge Pro (MG4030)?

Yes. The eGauge Pro supports more measurement channels than the Core model. The base template includes 15 cumulative and 15 power registers, but you may need to add extra Modbus inputs to cover all configured channels on the Pro.

What TCP port does the eGauge use for Modbus?

The eGauge typically uses the standard Modbus TCP port 502. Ensure no firewall rules on the local network block traffic between the gateway and the eGauge on this port.
