Siemens Siemens SINAMICS G120X Modbus RTU template

Siemens SINAMICS G120X

Pump and fan converter: speed, current, power, energy and faults, with start, stop and setpoint over RS485.

The Siemens SINAMICS G120X is a frequency converter for pumps and fans in building services, water and wastewater and industry. This Modbus RTU template reads speed, current, power, energy and fault codes, and lets you start, stop and set the speed from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show speed, current and power of every pump and fan converter on one ModbusCloud dashboard.
  • Send an email alert when bit 3 of the status word is set or the first fault number is no longer 0.
  • Store energy consumption and active power in the history and compare pumps with each other.
  • Start, stop or change the speed setpoint from the portal during commissioning or a service visit.
  • Adjust ramp times or the PID settings remotely without walking to the plant room.

Installation

  1. Connect the RS485 terminal of the G120X to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway and switch on the bus termination at the last device.

  2. Set p2030 to 2 (Modbus RTU) and set the address in p2021, the baud rate in p2020 and the parity in p2031.

  3. Switch the converter off and on so the new address takes effect.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus RTU device on the Gateway with the same address, 19200 baud, 8 data bits, even parity and 1 stop bit, and import this template.

  5. Check that the status word, DC link voltage and actual speed come in with sensible values.

Things to watch for

The converter does not answer on the bus. What should I check?

Check that p2030 is 2 and that the converter was switched off and on after the address in p2021 was set. The factory address 0 is not a valid slave address. Match baud rate and parity (19200, even) and swap A and B if nothing answers.

I write the control word but the motor does not start. Why?

Bit 10 (control via PLC) must be 1, and bits 1 to 6 must be 1 as well before bit 0 starts the motor. Check also that the command data set takes its commands from the fieldbus and that no fault is active (bit 3 of the status word).

How do I convert the main setpoint to rpm?

The main setpoint and main actual value are normalized: 16384 (4000 hex) is 100 % of the reference speed in p2000, which is readable and writable in register 40324.

The converter trips with F1910. What does that mean?

The Modbus telegram monitoring in p2040 ran out because no request arrived in time. Lower the poll interval in ModbusCloud or raise p2040.
