Siemens Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 6000 Modbus RTU template

Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 6000

Electromagnetic flow transmitter for water and other conductive liquids, with flow, totalizers and error status.

The Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 6000 is an electromagnetic flow transmitter that measures the flow and total volume of conductive liquids, such as irrigation water and drain water in greenhouses. This Modbus RTU template reads volume flow, both totalizers, error status and identity, and lets you reset totalizers, run batches and change flow, output and display settings from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show flow and both totalizers of each irrigation and drain water line on one dashboard.
  • Get an alert when the flow rises above its normal maximum, a sign of a leak or a burst pipe.
  • Compare daily water use per line from the totalizer history, which ModbusCloud keeps for 365 days.
  • Receive an email or webhook alert when the transmitter reports a pending error.
  • Reset or hold a totalizer and start or pause a batch remotely, without walking to the meter.
  • Check Q max, units and output settings of every meter from the office before you change them.

Installation

  1. Switch off the transmitter and fit the Modbus RTU add-on module FDK-085U0234. After power-up the display menu has a MODBUS RTU entry.

  2. Connect terminal 92 (Data+) and 93 (Data-) to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway and the shield to PE. On the last device on the bus, link 91 to 92 and 93 to 94.

  3. In the MODBUS RTU menu, check address, baud rate and parity (factory setting 1, 19200, even, 1 stop bit). Give each meter on the bus its own address.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device (RTU) with the same address and serial settings and import this template.

  5. Compare Volume Flow with the display and read Volume Flow Unit and Totalizer 1 Unit, so you can set the matching units in ModbusCloud.

Things to watch for

The meter does not answer. What should I check?

Check the MODBUS RTU menu on the display: factory setting address 1, 19200 baud, even parity, 1 stop bit. A new baud rate or parity only takes effect after a power cycle or after writing Restart Modbus Communication. Then swap Data+ and Data-, terminate the last device by linking 91 to 92 and 93 to 94, and ground the shield at one end only.

Which unit do flow and the totalizers have?

The unit selected on the transmitter, which Modbus and the display share. The factory default is m³/s for flow and m³ for the totalizers, but it is often changed at commissioning, for example to m³/h. Read Volume Flow Unit and Totalizer 1 Unit and give the registers the same unit in ModbusCloud. Q max, batch quantity and volume per pulse are always in m³/s and m³.

Why do some registers give an error or an odd value?

Zero Adjust Mode and Manual Zero Adjust exist only on the MAG 6000 SV. The module answers at most 26 registers per read. A lower or upper limit shows the full range of its data type when the setting has no own limit. Last Holding Register Error Number tells you why the last request was refused.

Can I reset totalizers or change settings from ModbusCloud?

Yes, once writing is enabled for the gateway; you request that per gateway in the portal. Reset and hold work through the totalizer commands. Units, Q max and output settings also change the display and the current, pulse and relay outputs, so agree changes with whoever uses those signals. Read the lower and upper limit first; a value outside them is refused.
