Thytronic Thytronic NA016 Modbus RTU template

Thytronic NA016

Feeder protection relay with phase and residual overcurrent protection and breaker monitoring.

The Thytronic NA016 is a feeder protection relay that guards medium voltage lines and transformers against phase and earth faults and supervises the trip circuit and circuit breaker. This Modbus RTU template reads the phase and residual currents, breaker position, trip flags and counters, and lets you change protection thresholds and send store and reset commands from ModbusCloud.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show the phase and residual currents of each feeder on a dashboard and keep a year of history per value.
  • Send an e-mail or webhook alert as soon as the trip flags rise above zero.
  • Follow the start and trip counters per threshold to see how often a feeder sees faults.
  • Check the overcurrent thresholds and operate times remotely and adjust them during commissioning.
  • Watch the self-test status and the trip circuit supervision to spot relay or wiring problems early.

Installation

  1. Wire the rear RS485 terminals A+ and B- of the NA016 to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, and terminate the bus at both ends with 120 Ω.

  2. On the relay, open the Communication menu, set the RS485 protocol to Modbus and note the address and baud rate (default 1 and 9600 baud).

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device on the RS485 port of the Gateway with the same address, 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit.

  4. Import the Thytronic NA016 template and check that the phase currents and the breaker position come in.

  5. Compare the currents with the relay display, and set the CT primary currents on the relay if you read primary amps.

Things to watch for

The Gateway gets no answer from the NA016. What should I check?

Check that the RS485 protocol on the relay is set to Modbus and not IEC 60870-5-103, that the address and baud rate match the device in ModbusCloud, and that A+ and B- are not swapped. Terminate the bus with 120 Ω at both ends.

The currents do not match the relay display. Why?

With the default Reading Direct the relay reports primary amps, calculated from the phase and residual CT primary currents set under Set, Base. With Reading Relative it reports multiples of the rated current. Check both settings on the relay and compare again.

I wrote a new threshold, but it is gone after a restart. Why?

The NA016 keeps changed settings in temporary memory until it receives the store command. After writing new values, write Store to the Settings Command register, or Clear to discard the changes. Read a setting first before you write it, so you know the current value.

Some values stay empty while the currents come in. Is that normal?

The clock, the identification and the fault, event and setting records are part of larger messages that the relay may only send as a whole. When one of those stays empty, the currents, inputs, breaker position and counters are still read as normal.

Can a test command trip the circuit breaker?

Yes. The test command runs each protection element with or without operating the output relays. A test with trip opens the circuit breaker, so only use it during commissioning or maintenance with the feeder in a safe state.
