Thytronic Thytronic SIF5600MMI Modbus RTU template

Thytronic SIF5600MMI

Phase and earth fault overcurrent relay to ENEL DK5600 with breaker control and logic selectivity.

The Thytronic SIF5600MMI is a digital protection relay that guards medium voltage lines and machines against overcurrent and earth faults to ENEL DK5600 and operates the circuit breaker. This Modbus RTU template reads the phase and residual currents, breaker position, counters and self-test status, and lets you change thresholds and send store, reset and breaker commands from ModbusCloud.

Number of installations (optional)

Use cases

  • Show the phase and residual currents of each feeder on a dashboard and keep a year of history per value.
  • Send an e-mail or webhook alert as soon as the breaker position reports open or alarm.
  • Follow the start and trip counters per threshold to see how often a feeder sees faults.
  • Check the overcurrent thresholds and operate times remotely and adjust them during commissioning.
  • Watch the self-test status to spot relay or pilot wire problems early.

Installation

  1. Wire the rear RS485 terminals A and B of the SIF5600MMI to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, and terminate the bus at both ends with 120 Ω.

  2. On the relay, check the Modbus address, baud rate, parity and stop bits with the keypad or ThySetter (default 1, 9600 baud, no parity, 1 stop bit).

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device on the RS485 port of the Gateway with the same address, 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit.

  4. Import the Thytronic SIF5600MMI template and check that the currents come in and that Device Identification shows 6; with 5, use the Thytronic SIF5600 template.

  5. Compare the currents with the relay display or ThySetter, and set the CT primary currents on the relay if you read primary amps.

Things to watch for

The Gateway gets no answer from the SIF5600MMI. What should I check?

Check that the address, baud rate, parity and stop bits on the relay match the device in ModbusCloud, and that A and B are not swapped. Terminate the bus with 120 Ω at both ends. The front RS232 port is only for a PC with ThySetter.

The currents do not match the relay display. Why?

With the default Reading Direct the relay reports primary amps, calculated from the phase and residual CT primary currents set under Set, Base. With Reading Relative it reports multiples of the rated current. Check both settings on the relay and compare again.

I wrote a new threshold, but it is gone after a restart. Why?

The SIF5600 keeps changed settings in temporary memory until it receives the store command. After writing new values, write Store to the Settings Command register, or Clear to discard the changes. Read a setting first before you write it, so you know the current value.

Some values stay empty while the currents come in. Is that normal?

The clock, the identification, the event records, the output relay functions and some base settings are part of larger messages that the relay may only send as a whole. When one of those stays empty, the currents, inputs, breaker position and counters are still read as normal.

Can a command from ModbusCloud open the circuit breaker?

Yes. The breaker command opens or closes the circuit breaker, and a test with trip operates the output relays and can open it too. Only use these commands during commissioning or maintenance, with the feeder in a safe state.
