Danfoss EKE 1C

Superheat controller for stepper motor expansion valves in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps.

The Danfoss EKE 1C is a superheat controller that drives a stepper motor expansion valve on the evaporator of chillers, cold rooms, air conditioning and heat pumps. This Modbus RTU template reads superheat, valve opening degree, temperatures, pressures and alarms, and lets you write the main switch, setpoints and controller settings from ModbusCloud.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Use cases

  • Show actual superheat, opening degree and suction temperature on one dashboard per evaporator.
  • Alert when the alarm status or error status turns on, or when superheat stays above a limit.
  • Keep a year of superheat and media temperature history to see how a cold room behaves through the seasons.
  • Switch the controller on or off remotely with the main switch register.
  • Adjust the temperature setpoint or the superheat limits from ModbusCloud without going to site.

Installation

  1. Wire the RS485 terminals D+ and D- of the EKE 1C to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway, with a 120 ohm resistor at both ends of the bus.

  2. Check on the controller or with the MMIGRS2 display that the address is unique on the bus and that the bus runs at 19200 baud, 8E1.

  3. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus device (RTU) with that address and these serial settings, and import this template.

  4. Confirm that actual superheat, S2 temperature and Pe pressure show plausible values.

  5. Decide which setpoints you want to write, and leave configuration registers alone while the system is running.

Things to watch for

The controller does not answer on the bus. What should I check?

The factory setting is address 1, 19200 baud, even parity, 1 stop bit. Many masters default to no parity. Swap D+ and D- if nothing answers, and check that there is a 120 ohm termination at both ends. The EKE has no bias resistors of its own.

Why do temperatures and pressures look ten times too high?

Most values are sent as whole numbers with one decimal implied, so 52 means 5.2. The template applies that scale. For the temperature setpoint the scale is not certain: check the raw value against the display once, and change the scale of that one register if needed.

Can I run several EKE controllers on one RS485 line?

Yes. Give each controller its own address in parameter G001 and keep the same speed and parity on all of them. Wire the bus as one line from device to device, without long branches.

Why is a setting not accepted when I write it?

Many configuration parameters, such as refrigerant, valve and sensor setup, can only be changed while the main switch is off. Switch the controller off, write the setting, and switch it on again. Write only values inside the range of the parameter, and change settings on a running plant with care.
