Installation

1. 1Enable Modbus TCP on the SmartLogger by logging in as Advanced User or Special User, then navigating to Settings, Modbus TCP, and setting Link setting to Enable (Limited) or Enable (Unlimited).
2. 2Connect the SmartLogger to the same LAN as the ModbusCloud Gateway using a standard Ethernet cable; the SmartLogger listens on TCP port 502 by default.
3. 3In the ModbusCloud portal, add a new device, import the Huawei SmartLogger (pv) template, enter the SmartLogger IP address and port 502, and assign the correct Modbus unit ID matching the logical device address shown in the SmartLogger device list.
4. 4Verify the connection by confirming that the power register (40521) returns a plausible watt value during daylight and that the energy register (40560) increments over time.

Things to watch for

Modbus TCP is enabled but the gateway cannot connect. Why?

Huawei disables third-party Modbus TCP access by default. Log into the SmartLogger WebUI as Advanced User or Special User, go to Settings, Modbus TCP, and set Link setting to Enable (Limited) or Enable (Unlimited). Without this step, port 502 will refuse external connections.

I get exception code 3 (illegal data value) on the energy register. What now?

Exception 3 on register 40560 typically means the SmartLogger firmware version does not expose this register, or the addressed logical device ID does not correspond to a PV meter. Verify the unit ID in the portal matches the device's logical address in the SmartLogger device list, and confirm your SmartLogger firmware is up to date.

Power reads a large unexpected value or all zeros at midday. Why?

Register 40521 is an int32, so a missing sign extension or wrong byte order in the client can produce garbage. Ensure the ModbusCloud Gateway uses big-endian word order, which is standard for Huawei Modbus TCP. Also confirm the unit ID targets the correct production meter, not the grid meter, as the same register address maps to different values depending on device type.

The SmartLogger serves multiple inverters. Which unit ID do I use?

Each device behind the SmartLogger has its own logical Modbus address. For plant-level PV production totals, use the logical address assigned to the aggregated production meter or inverter group as shown in the SmartLogger device list. Reading with the wrong ID will return values for a different device or trigger an exception.
