Janitza Janitza UMG96RME Modbus RTU template

Janitza UMG96RME

The Janitza UMG96RME is a three-phase multifunctional power analyser used in energy distribution panels, switchboards, and building management systems. This Modbus RTU template reads per-phase voltage and current on L1, L2, and L3, total and per-phase active and reactive power, grid frequency, and cumulative active consumption and production energy counters. All float32 values account for the configured current transformer ratio. Connecting the UMG96RME to ModbusCloud Gateway gives installers and energy managers continuous visibility into load balance, power quality, and site-level energy consumption without manual meter reads.

If a device is not in the library yet, we build the template for free as soon as we have the register data.

Use cases

  • Monitor per-phase active power on L1, L2, and L3 to detect load imbalance across distribution circuits.
  • Track cumulative active consumption and production energy to verify cost-centre or tenant billing figures.
  • Alert on unexpected drops in frequency to identify grid instability events at the metered supply point.
  • Compare per-phase voltages over time to spot voltage unbalance that could damage connected equipment.
  • Report daily and monthly active energy totals for ISO 50001 energy management documentation.

Installation

  1. Set the device address (Addr. 000) and RS485 baud rate (Addr. 001) on the UMG96RME front panel or via the parameter menu; ensure all devices on the same RS485 bus share the same baud rate and a unique address.

  2. Wire the RS485 A and B terminals of the UMG96RME to the corresponding RS485 terminals on the ModbusCloud Gateway using shielded twisted-pair cable; fit 120-ohm termination resistors at both ends of the bus segment if the meter is at the end of the run.

  3. In the ModbusCloud portal, add the ModbusCloud Gateway, then import the Janitza UMG96RME template and assign the Modbus unit ID to match the address set on the device.

  4. Verify the connection by checking live readings for voltage_l1 (address 19000) in the portal; a valid float32 value close to your nominal line voltage confirms the register map is aligned.

Things to watch for

All register values read as zero or NaN. What is wrong?

The UMG96RME returns float32 values across two consecutive 16-bit Modbus registers. If your gateway requests only one register per address instead of two (length 2), the value will be malformed or zero. Confirm that the template requests 2 registers for every float32 entry starting at the base address.

Current readings look correct on the meter display but are wrong over Modbus.

Float32 registers on the UMG96RME already incorporate the programmed current transformer ratio. If the CT ratio has not been set correctly on the device (Addr. parameter menu), the Modbus value will be scaled incorrectly. Verify the CT primary and secondary values in the device parameter menu match your installed transformers.

The gateway cannot communicate with the meter at all. How do I diagnose?

Check that the RS485 bus address configured on the UMG96RME matches the unit ID in the ModbusCloud portal. Also verify baud rate, data bits (8), parity (none), and stop bits (2) on both sides. Ensure the cable is shielded twisted-pair; CAT-style cables are not suitable for RS485 on this device.

Energy counter values are unexpectedly low or appear to have reset.

The UMG96RME provides a reset-energy-meter function via parameter address 507, accessible over Modbus. If another system or user accidentally triggered this parameter, the counters will have cleared. Restrict Modbus write access to the device to authorised systems only to prevent unintended counter resets.
