ZCS Azzurro ZCS Azzurro Hybrid Inverter (grid) Modbus RTU template

ZCS Azzurro Hybrid Inverter (grid)

The ZCS Azzurro Hybrid Inverter is a three-phase hybrid PV inverter for residential and commercial solar-plus-storage installations, produced by Italian manufacturer Zucchetti Centro Sistemi. This ModbusCloud template reads the inverter's grid-side registers over Modbus RTU: grid active power (import and export, signed), per-phase currents on L1, L2, and L3, and a cumulative energy counter. Connecting the ModbusCloud Gateway to the RS485 COM port gives installers and facility managers a continuous, cloud-accessible record of grid interaction without additional metering hardware.

Use cases

  • Monitor real-time grid active power to verify whether the Hybrid Inverter is importing or exporting at any moment.
  • Track the cumulative energy counter over time to produce monthly grid-consumption reports for building owners.
  • Compare L1, L2, and L3 phase currents to detect persistent phase imbalance across the three-phase grid connection.
  • Alert on sustained grid import during daylight hours to spot underperforming PV strings or battery issues.
  • Verify that grid power drops to near zero during self-consumption periods to confirm energy management is working correctly.

Installation

  1. Enable Modbus RTU on the ZCS Azzurro Hybrid Inverter by entering the inverter menu under the communication or Modbus section and confirming the slave address (default 1) and baud rate (9600, 8N1).

  2. Connect the ModbusCloud Gateway RS485 terminals to the inverter COM port: use the A+ and B- pins on the inverter's communication connector, following the pinout in the ZCS Azzurro datalogger manual.

  3. In the ModbusCloud portal, add the Gateway, import the ZCS Azzurro Hybrid Inverter (grid) template, and set the unit ID to match the slave address configured on the inverter.

  4. Spot-check register 530 in the portal's live data view: under normal grid-connected operation you should see a signed watt value; confirm L1, L2, and L3 current registers also return plausible readings before saving the configuration.

Things to watch for

Why do I get CRC errors when polling the inverter directly over RTU?

Direct RS485 RTU polling of ZCS Azzurro HYD inverters is known to produce intermittent CRC errors at the hardware level. Using the ModbusCloud Gateway, which handles framing and retry logic internally, resolves this. Ensure the baud rate is set to 9600 with 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit on both ends.

The gateway connects but the power and current registers return zero or no value. What should I check?

Confirm the inverter is in grid-connected operating mode: registers return zero during standby or fault states. Verify the Modbus slave ID in the portal matches the address set on the inverter display. Also check that A+ and B- wires are not swapped; reversing the RS485 pair is a common wiring mistake on this inverter.

The energy counter value seems implausibly large or resets unexpectedly. Why?

Register 544 is a uint32 cumulative counter. If the inverter firmware has been reset or the inverter was replaced, the counter restarts from zero. The ModbusCloud portal stores historical snapshots, so gaps in the timeline indicate a counter reset rather than missing data.

Phase currents on L1, L2, or L3 read as negative or out of range. How do I fix this?

The per-phase current registers are int16 and may return negative values if the CT clamps connected to the inverter are oriented incorrectly, or if the inverter is in export mode and the register represents directional current. Cross-check the sign against the active power register to determine direction before assuming a wiring fault.
