Agrowtek Agrowtek RX4i Outlet Relay Modbus RTU template

Agrowtek RX4i Outlet Relay

Switched outlet relay with four or one receptacle and closure counters.

The Agrowtek RX4i is an intelligent outlet relay with four switched 120 V receptacles, and the RX1i is the same idea with one receptacle. This Modbus RTU template lets you switch each outlet from ModbusCloud and reads the relay state, the closure count per relay and the device information.

Use cases

  • Switch a circulation fan or humidifier remotely from ModbusCloud when the grower asks for it.
  • Turn a heater on at night and off in the morning with a ModbusCloud automation on a schedule.
  • Send an email when a relay stays on longer than expected or its closure count grows unusually fast.
  • Track closure counts per relay in the 365 day history to plan replacement before the rated cycles are reached.
  • Check the relay state of all outlets on one dashboard during a service visit.

Installation

  1. Mount the relay on a wall with the connections facing down and wire 120 V from a 15 A protected circuit (RX4i).

  2. Connect the GrowNET port with a CAT5 cable to an LX2 ModLINK, directly or through an HX8 hub.

  3. Wire TX/RX+ and TX/RX- of the LX2 to the RS485 port of the ModbusCloud Gateway and terminate the bus.

  4. In ModbusCloud, add a Modbus RTU device with the address of the relay, 19200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit, and import this template.

  5. Check that the Relay registers show the state of the outlet LEDs and that the closure counts can be read.

Things to watch for

The relay does not answer. What should I check?

Check that the LX2 ModLINK is powered and set to 19200 baud 8N1 or to your own settings, that the device address is correct and unique, and swap TX/RX+ and TX/RX- if needed. Never plug the GrowNET port into an Ethernet switch.

Why does a relay switch off by itself after I write it on?

The communication timeout turns the relays off when the master is silent for the set number of seconds. Make sure ModbusCloud polls the relay more often than the timeout, or raise the timeout. Writing from ModbusCloud is off per gateway by default and is switched on by request on the control tab.

The relay clicks and the LED is on, but the device does not run. What now?

Plug the device directly into a wall outlet to check that it works, and plug a known working device into the relay outlet. On the RX4i, check the fuse on the board with the power off and replace it only with the rating printed on the board.

Why do relays 2 to 4 return an error?

The RX1i has only relay 1 and its counter. Requests for relays or counters that do not exist return an illegal address error, so delete relays 2 to 4 and their counters from the device in ModbusCloud.
